Here are some reviews and chats about bands that I and others wish Tears For Fears could collaborate with
New Music from Tears & Kooks in Band Land

Tweets, updates and “other news” have let us know that new music, a new album and maybe more are not out of the question for Tears For Fears. We are grateful that they are active and members are in the studio …again, pay attention, read those tweets, the answers are right there…and that’s all we’ll say on that.
While we wait, patiently and lovingly as noted on Curt’s wall by followers of the band we’re going to explore the new material that is already out.
Curt did a collaboration with Junkie_XL this past year. His song “When is Enough Not Enough” got quite a bit of attention from fans and the industry. The impressive sound was addictive and many couldn’t get enough of it. It was unreal how we reacted to this piece of music. You can simply click through that link on his name, follow him and visit his site to buy a copy of that magnificent song and the entire album.
Here’s a Youtube clip:

In the Orzabal Family one can find the band DelaQ. At this point, they need no introduction. Their Album Into the Blue was released in 2012. We reviewed it thoroughly and fell head over heels for just about every track.
We purchased several copies. At one point it became extremely hard to turn it off. All of this music came out around the same time…one right after the other…it was a feast for superfans everywhere.

From DelaQ we met Wild World. Fellow Tears for Fears Travel Superfan Alisa is the lead singer. They released an album in 2011 and another last month (Jan 2013). The most recent, titled, “Campaign of Angels” is yet another piece of magnificent work. Very strong and heavily accented with instruments. It’s a journey for your mind and spirit.

In the sea of fans, we were introduced to Robert O. on the night of the Brasil 2012 show. It was incredible…this guy has put together a ton of tribute songs and remixes of the bands work using his own voice for every layer on each track. He even wrote a tribute song to fellow fans. All of this can be found on soundcloud. Superfan RJO. has been encouraged to keep writing, keep pushing himself to the next level…we say the same. Thank you Robert!

All this new music…so much to dive into and enjoy… Thanks to several members of DelaQ and WildWorld and approval from the Good Man Mr. Smith we’re going to give away some of this music through our Tears For Fears Fan Trivia. Answer 12 questions correctly and be the first to submit them to the Tears For Fears and Kooks Fan Page message button. The first person with the correct answers to their list of questions wins a prize. We have four to give away this spring.

Manami -Tears For Fears Travel Fan Animation Artist

Manami is the fan club artist who creates lovely photos for fans’ birthdays and special occasions. As with all fan-generated projects, Manami volunteers her time to make fun and exciting artwork that fans and the band have recognized on numerous occasions. Despite both she and Juli-Juli’s claims to “not know English very well” they have managed to communicate just fine with so many of us each and everyday.

Manami’s 2012 Greeting Card was used by the beloved Smith Family for their holiday greeting card. She was later approached by other high profile artists to create cards for them too. What an honour!
We enjoy Manami’s work and cool sense of humour to the daily ongoings in superfan life….from fun conversations to more serious situations she has managed to do a great deal of work in her years volunteering with us. We appreciate all who respect her work by giving her credit on the contributions she has made to their projects vs. taking them as their own. We feel she is a huge asset to the group and can’t wait to see more of her magnificent art. Thanks again Manami!!
We’re very happy she got some great hugs from the band while they were in Japan. Stellar night for our dears in Tokyo and Osaka!
Special art can be purchased. That which features the band’s image is not for sale and must be shared with permission from multiple sources.

Loving Longacre Hall

When we first learned about Longacre Hall from Curt Smith we knew immediately that it was a place we’d like to explore. Carri was one of the first to leap right into research. Before long we decided it would be one of the places to which we’d give our annual donation.
The original plan was a quiet donation, no LOUD announcements and EGO driven fanfare. Then someone suggested to open it up for others to donate…which made sense. Why keep it closed to Travel Fans? There are over 500 active fans online. We published a blog entry on the project and encouraged people to give on their own or pool their money with ours.
We knew it was too ambitious, yet we did it anyway hoping for the best. The team leads donated and G-d bless Carri for being the highest contributors of them all. But after converting the money into American dollars (and calculating that into British pounds) the sum was sad…very very sad.
I think we have just enough cash to pay for copy paper or 1-2 hours of legal fees if they end up in need to fight for the building (we hope not). Not being able to do more has sort of…crushed the spirit of our travel fan group but we sure made some amazing friends! Kath, Angie, Mr. Smith (Curt’s brother)…these lovely individuals reached out to us to say hi and thanks. We don’t know how they found out about the project but we’re glad they know we are thinking of them and wish them the best.
We’ll do what we can remotely for these new friends! Though we haven’t met them in person, their kind nature has not only warmed the building’s stones but a ton of hearts and souls on 4 continents. Let’s keep them and their effort to preserve the Snowhill community in our prayers!
Thank You,
TeamROCS
Duran Duran Fans & Kooks …the not so secret sister travel fan club
Duran Duran Revisits Atlanta
It’s been about a year since we were graced with Duran Duran’s outstanding show. They are reportedly back in the studio preparing another album. But before we dance into the future, let’s look at their amazing past tour and particulary the stop in Atlanta as that’s what I’m most familiar with.

Travelling Fans
Duran Duran have travel fans just like Tears for Fears. They are a group of VIPs that are registered with the official fanclub and attend performances all over the world. They are an impressive group of people. We were fortunate to get in touch with a few of them, mainly Ingrid and she is just a delight! She and several of the team have been featured countless times on the Duran Duran page and at the Atlanta show were allowed to announce the band. It was quite a moment in superfanland.
I arrived early as always. It had been raining as it always seems to do on concert days in Atlanta. We get all four seasons for sure when certain bands come to town. There we were humid and damp from the elements, people in plastic ponchos covering gorgeous outfits that were carefully put together celebrating milestones in the band’s history. I stood for what may have been an hour in the merch line. Soon enough I got several things…a leather manpurse, Tshirt and bunch of other things. I was grateful for it, caught up in the fandom.
I bought my ticket to the show months in advance through the fanclub. Because I didn’t choose the VIP option I was only able to get as close as “the stage door” as my seat. It’s a great seat but I would have loved to be in box seat or the first 3 rows. I mean, when you know all the songs, all the words, practice dance moves and the like you want to be near the mike, right? So there I was next to the stage door. My friends teasing me that I’m probably going to get to sing. Duran Duran don’t know me THAT well to let that happen, again, this isn’t Tears For Fears, these are their friends. I continued tweeting and the band’s social media group RT’d everything. It was amazing. Something about getting an RT and knowing “they know you’re alive and supporting” is just everything and more.
MDNR opened for them and I thought she was great. She had upbeat lyrics, dressed in fun fashion and her songs were very club-like and modern 80s meets the Millennial. I know some were not pleased but for me she was stellar! She interacted with the crowd while playing instruments, a sort of one-woman show. She was just…FUN! After she left the video began…a long intro to what would be one of the best shows in ATL that year (with all due respect to the B52s at the Fox earlier that summer). The video was of a woman, dressed beautifully in Victorian and Rococo era style dress and hair…running for miles. She just kept running…and that drove people insane. They weren’t sure when it was going to end and the man beside me put on quite a show of his disapproval to the point his girlfriend became embarrassed and asked him to sit down. I think he rather liked the attention. I admit, that video was long and I had wished someone would have come out onto the stage running around in Roccoco attire to sort of bring life to that. But I liked it nonetheless…

Then with a burst of energy Duran Duran came to the stage, playing the set list just as we expected including songs that everyone had requested. The DD social media crew was on it like lighting. I tweeted, “The show is now Live. Duran Duran starts now” along with a picture of the audience from where I was standing and dancing. They quickly retweeted it. There were tributes to issues that fans were going through and several times Simon Le Bon, the Great came over to our side and paid some real attention to us, grabbing Anna’s hand the whole way. The subtle cues and recognitioin didn’t go unnoticed, thank you kind Sir, much appreciated!
Special Moments
Again, one of the travel fans from Los Angeles (Ingrid’s travel pal) on the front row was given the microphone to announce a few fun things the band asked of her. Simon said, “We’ve never met have we?” Which was a lie, any travel fan and dedicated fan knew who she was. She’d been at every show. In fact, she is so well known she’s got as much of a fan club of her own. These girls are hot! They look amazing and always perch up front like loyalist. It’s something to be proud of, I’m certainly proud of them.
“Leave the Light On” was played for a fan who had either died or gone missing during the tour. It’s clear that the band pays attention and checks their twitter feed. This was precious and very important, and again, appreciated.
Also, the band said they’d been to Atlanta more times than any other city on this particular tour
. It’s true, they’d been there 4 times and with every show the crowds got bigger and bigger to the point it was sold out this time. We can’t wait for them to come back.
This concert was even better than the one from Oct 2011, if you can believe that. I had a great time. Danced like a soldier of sound and people around me joyfully made note that I didn’t stop singing and dancing… and I didn’t. I held it the whole time, choreography and all that jazz with every song. I made a lot of new friends…many of whom danced along with me.
So how are they a sister fan club to Tears for Fears?
If you have to ask at this point, you’re gonna get your band fan card revoked. LOL. JT and Curt are friends (remember the infamous twitter pictures?). There was a joint tour at one point and there remains a comraderie so we are happily tagging along with their fans as well, supportive and showing up much like DD fans do at TFF shows. We’re sister fans.
So, both bands have new material underway, looks like 2014 is gonna be bananas!!! Bring it!! 🙂
Thanks for reading,
-Andye
Musical Tribute to the Band & Superfans

Everybody on the Travel Fan Team works so hard to make a peaceful and ridiculously fun experience for all involved. Carri and her gift of getting seats, Becky and her talent for picking perfect shirts, Cammie’s calm nature, Traci’s positive attitude (even if she does argue excessively w/Curt over politics. Mercy!) and our teams in The Philippines, Japan and France who are always very active and promote the band in ways that many might not ever see… Someone took notice of all of that and wrote a song about it! It’s a very touching song (and in my opinion is as beautiful as the band & their family’s spirits). Roland and Curt, the entire team and their families have been a beaming light for us 365 days a year for over 2 decades…and it’s just overwhelming. We are all steeped in infinite gratitude.
Robert’s tribute to us is here… https://soundcloud.com/rorzechowski/song-for-andye (soundcloud)
This song was originally released on 14 December. Due to the tragedies of the day, we felt it would be best to highlight it another time. May we dedicate this also to the lost children and their friends who may now be using music to heal through hard times. May the innocent love of creativity and art always be celebrated in music programs for all ages. Thank you Roland and Curt for your inspiration, huge hugs to the supporting band members and families and GARGANTUAN THANKS to Robert for creating this tribute!

**note from the moderator, Andye**
Robert spoke to me one night on Facebook …and asked me a very tough question. He said he knew I cherished both Curt and Roland equally and do not believe in putting one over the other. I adore their solo work and thrive on the two being together BUT if one of them was going to write a song about me who would it be. I told him this: That’s easy, Roland. I have had the ultimate pleasure of hearing Curt and learning his solo style I almost feel I could predict what he’d write if he wrote a song about me. Although with all due respect, I can’t see why on earth they would (??) Do musicians write songs about fans? Roland, of whom I’ve only had quick interactions and miraculous moments…well, I have no idea what he would write. I think it would be amazing to hear his thoughts about a fan musically. So, there’s my answer.

Robert then asked, well what would you think Curt would write. I said, perhaps he’d mention how everything TFF, CS and RO are my life…this and prayer keep me going…two days later, I find this song in my inbox and twitter news feed. Wow! I tried not to cry…to be tough…and say, amazing job but my eyes were soaked with tears by the time I stood up…and I hadn’t even finished listening to it. I found out other fans felt the same way…

*Note from Robert O.* Being a TFF fan myself, I know how much the band means to the Travel Fan team. I am humbled and honored that my music was given any consideration at all since TFF is such a tight, innovative, and masterful group whose music will inspire generations to come. I love their music!

Here’s another song by Robert inspired by the band…Enjoy! Follow him on Soundcloud! (you’ll have to click thru to youtube to view it…it has some restrictions on it)

Welcome to whose life? Our Life… steeped in gratitude!! This rare find is the long version of EWTRTW. If you’ve never heard it you haven’t lived! Cheers to all the musicians who are inspired by this band, have worked with this band and their dedicated fans!

Andye, Carri, Marcio, Carolyn, Juli, Joyce, Becky & Robert
Would Tears for Fears ft. Sophie Hunger & Tinariwen (maybe?)
Funny how Tears For Fears have been a great cushion and encouragement for me to appreciate my own culture. Over the years they’ve worked with a number of cultured artists and always have a diverse group alongside them in some form or fashion. I believe with all my heart Tears For Fears would make great music event hosts, headlining an international night of global stars. I recently saw two I could imagine in one of their future fascinating festival line ups.
Tinariwen featuring Sophie Hunger
Tinariwen’s legendary show was so incredible and so overwhelming it took me over a week to wrap my mind around the experience. I first saw them on TV… CNN International in fact, on Inside Africa and other programs highlighting the world’s great musicians. A note had barely been played and I was already hooked. To hear of talent bursting out of the coveted and sacred Tuareg region of the world was exhilarating. And thank G-d for Facebook because that’s how I found out they were coming. With them was Sophie Hunger who explained to us how she and her band drive for nearly 8 hours a day in a car from city to city to do these 40 minute shows and how much it meant to her. She said she appreciated us paying attention as if that wasn’t something that happened regularly…but how on earth could one not pay attention to her? That voice! Oh myyy! That alone I feel is why she should one day perform alongside Tears For Fears. She’s got this range from heaven and her lyrics are deep. Accompanied by two outstanding multi-instrumentalists; the combination of the three make them an opening act you almost don’t want to perform without!
My Show Experience: The Fan Point of View I don’t think the show was promoted very well. How I coincidently ran across this concert announcement is not how a legendary group’s show should be spread. Nonetheless, Alhumdulillah! I got my ticket about 2-weeks before and then on the blessed day was up at 6am to get ready for their 8pm show. I went through a number of rituals I do for shows I deem sacred. There was the cleansing, polishing scrubbing, raqs workouts, meditation…the whole nine yards. This was not a show to take lightly. Anyone could be there…anything could happen. Hours rolled by and 6pm came. It was “go time.” I happily found the Variety Playhouse with ease. I’d been there so many times but my nervousness left me concerned if I’d find it without getting turned around in circles. All that worry for nothing. I was 2nd at the door.
I sat at Fevzi’s (Ali Baba’s) place and listened to the ultra talented Sophie Hunger chit chat with new fans who warned her not to take that beer down the street or she’d be arrested. They complimented her shoes and cool European clothes. She was very cute. Little did I know she had one incredible set that she was about to lay on us. A new fan asked for her autograph and I specifically remember her saying, “I’d give it to you but it’s worthless.” My heart sank! She has no idea of her worth! The lady is so talented and beautiful. If I had been that fan I’d have demanded she give me her autograph…or bribed her with another beer…something!! LOL!
The line began to form and there were mostly couples as expected. This show I imagined would bring in families and tons of locals from the Maghreb. I rather expected a homogenous audience but instead found it to be full of international families and young men and women who looked as if they’d been following this band for a while with their demand to be left alone in the front row. Once we were permitted inside (right at 7:30 on the dot as promised) Security came around telling each of us seated on the front row that people would get up and stand in front of us. We quickly let them know we’d be one of the many doing just that. They got the picture and left us alone to squirm uncontrollably for this show to start.
Superfanatic Friend
Victoria from Tennessee drove 5 hours to see Tinariwen. She too was up at 6am to get ready for the show. Her family dropped her off at the venue at 3pm and she was fortunate to meet the band and hang out with them while she waited for the show. Her energy was through the roof. She was just like me at a Tears For Fears concert…eager and waiting with angst as the hours ticked away til show time. While we waited, the music was just pure hard core blue-grass. Songs about cornbread and square dancing with the local gals…It was complimentary to the night only because we knew we were about to hear some raw-straight-from-the desert-music…and well, that blue grass set was straight out of Appalachia. Vicky was tapping her feet the whole time. I don’t think it was because she necessarily enjoyed it but because she was so anxious for the show to start anything to get her mind off of the wait was helping. Here’s her story about her experience: Feel free to read this and come back to see it from an international community point of view.
Though I adore their music and got hooked to their sound quickly, as it takes me back to the loving days when my family was all here in the states; I’m not nearly as up on my Tinariwen facts as Victoria. So I was thrilled to have her with me and get a thorough lesson on who each group member was and what songs were on the set list. If it wasn’t for Victoria wouldn’t have had as good of a time. She was a great help the whole evening and if she hadn’t been there I’d have spent the whole time worried about singing the songs correctly or calling certain members by the wrong name.
Sophie sang several of her own songs and changed up one to fit the environment… including the words “Little 5 Points” in the lyrics. Such a cool nod to all of us in Atlanta and the neighbourhood that was hosting them for the evening. The remaining songs were a mix of English, Swiss German and some French. I enjoyed her entire set and certainly want to collect her music. She made a new fan out of me within the first 3 minutes of sharing her powerful sound. It was incredible. You have to hear her. Here’s a short clip that doesn’t do her justice but you’ll perhaps understand…
One of the beautiful things about the night was the aesthetically pleasing stage. I’ve been to so many shows at The Variety Playhouse and I’ve never seen a stage set so well. The colours changed with each song and the background was gorgeous. I don’t remember this when seeing Cheb Khaled, Gogol Bordello or others. Of course many bands have their own backdrops but was that of the playhouse or?? Stunning choice!! When Sophie completed her set the stage lights came up for just a few minutes. By this time the whole playhouse was filled…not sold out but filled and that was comforting…though this band is SO BIG there’s no explanation as to why the tickets didn’t sell out and several fans made their voices heard with anger that more people weren’t there to hear them. Of all cities in the south, Atlanta should have sold out. But embarrassingly we were not and that may be due to the personal agendas of many people in our community or…The “messed up economy” that has left many without the means to attend anything at all.
Tinariwen
House lights dropped, the band began to emerge from the gorgeous backdrop. Victoria and the whole front row lept up and walked forward clapping while zaghareets wailed through the venue. We stopped just short at the stage, my head right at Hassan’s feet and their spirit just took over.
The set included a number of their top hits and some of the newer items that have been promoted around the world. Right now, my favourite song by them is this one on which Carlos Santana accompanied at the Montreaux Jazz Festival. And our show felt very intimate like this one here:
And here’s a short clip of perhaps my favourite song of the night.

Tinariwen’s influence is certainly from their culture/our culture…that sound from Mali/Niger and surrounding countries and cultures that make up one of the most beautiful and naturally serene parts of the world. But Rock, Blues and other genres are embedded into their sound because they heard this music on television growing up. Read their history here: They are the Desert’s Guitar. They are some of the best representatives of the region’s sound and again what an honour to be front row dancing and swaying in a cultural fashion (as we do) with them leading the way…particularly Hassan, who dances the entire time. It’s amazing.
When they walked off stage my greedy, selfish, superfanself went into beg mode. “Hassan, I want a towel. Give me a towel, please?!!” They had barely had a moment to bow to the audience I was already reaching cause I was afraid they’d walk off. So I’m yelling in French and Arabic to please let me have the towel. Hassan stuck around and got the two towels left on stage and gently threw them to me and Victoria. We were totally giddy. My pals in the international community who know “how I am” laughed and shook their heads. “She’ll sleep good tonight,” I could hear in the minds of several. Security even said, “I don’t get it…what joy do you get from a towel?” I told him quickly about my collection from bands all over the world.
Then I walked toward the backstage door because one of the members was standing there. I got some pictures and then security politely told us we had to go because they needed to clear the area and start breaking down the stage. The members of Tinariwen were gracious and said, “Just come with us…” And so those of us who were standing around them (about 10 of us at this point who had gotten past security’s suggestion to use the other door and leave out the front) followed like little ducks to a tiny little room…then a door opened and low and behold there the rest of the band was and the tour bus. Groups members welcomed us to hang out with them…so I had to be polite and stay right? LOL!
We spent about an hour taking picture after picture, getting autographs “Fee Arabi…la’a englessi” I began… stating that please don’t write in English on my ticket. Put it in Arabic! They laughed. I gave Hassan a kiss on the cheek which may not have been the smartest idea because in our culture that’s just being forward and fast. Haram yani…but he got over it and next thing I knew we were all cozy and chatting like brother and sister. Then Ibrahim opened the tour bus door and one of the ladies from Ethiopia got on…then another from India…and then he motioned for me to get on… “Moi?” I asked. He bowed slightly and said, “Yesss…” Well, I wasn’t gonna ask twice. My embroidered gown clad self lifted the garment so that I wouldn’t trip and fall and climbed the steps inside what may as well have been a great palace.
We sat down, tea was made and we had one of the best evenings that lasted well into 1am…there was singing, storytelling and much more as we sat their cozy and tight together. I loved it! The last time I was on a tour bus was when Bob Marley’s son Ziggy was in town and I waited an hour and half to get onboard. That little friendly family visit cost me my cultural friendship-marriage but I wouldn’t have changed a thing. So there with Tinariwen I felt right at home as if this was supposed to happen. And ceremonies began, tea was poured and conversations the likes you only see at home began…there wasn’t a topic that wasn’t discussed. It was just incredible. (video begins with concert moment)
One of the members from Café Istanbul was there and wanted to go get food and bring it for all. But the night went on and on and we were well into our little ceremony so by the time it was over I suggested she take the guys to Café Istanbul so they could see how beautiful it is. Things were moving a bit fast at this point…and I’ll leave it at that.
It was a gorgeous evening, I made some new friends and I was just absolutely amazed with the kindness and friendly nature of such a grand legendary band. If Tears for Fears are ever in the mood for a jazzy set they’ve got to add Sophie Hunger and Tinariwen to the line up. I was absolutely floored by the music, the energy…everything! It was certainly a night to remember. Victoria and I are eager for the next one!
Thanks for reading!
