Tears for Fears 26 & 27 October – London

TFF RAH

Accommodations: The Kensington

If you were one of the fortunate ones able to snag a very difficult-to-obtain ticket for the 27 October show, you might as well go all out with a nice stay at The Kensington. This hotel is actually one of the preferred hotels of the Royal Albert Hall. Of course, if you’re local I’m sure you’re giving me the two finger salute.

Now, for those of us stateside who usually pay anywhere from $50-$275 a night for a standard to slightly upgraded room (with the exception of Vegas shows where we just pretend money is no object and go buck wild with cabanas for 3 days and parties), the Kensington is going to cost you around $400 US a night after tax. And…the room will be half the size of the swank abodes we’ve been spoiled with on tour. So, just be mentally ready for that. It’s gorgeous though. Take a look at the photos.

For those of us not going, myself included, this is like missing a Royal Wedding. The venue is unbelievable. It’s quite the answered prayer in many ways. There have been hundreds (I’m not exaggerating) of fans in the UK who have all but sold their insides begging and pleading Tears for Fears to have a show there (as if the band really has total control over that). And here it is…and damn if something funky didn’t happen the day the tickets went on sale to prevent us from going in addition to what was already a stab in the heart with short notice of ticket sales (remember when we said your 6 months of savings should also include $300 for a couple of Tears for Fears tickets? People think we’re trying to be funny – Nope, this is a prime example). Thankfully, Good Man Curt Smith – G-d love him – tweeted forward with a statement that once again proved his knowledge and sentiment to the cause of the fans. They know WE TRY hard to be at every show and that is an understatement.

Let me tell you right now… these “schemes” don’t hurt. Consider joining for future. You never know…

I have been that fan that literally flies home, goes to work and flies out that same evening JUST to see them one more time and in many cases, over and over again. It’s just THAT healing. But it’s even better when you’ve got a great venue with amazing seats and don’t have to contend with standing in queue 6-7 hours prior to the show for the dreaded Gen Am. THIS my dear fellow fans, is the show of shows to be at and I pray that something works out so that it happens again (maybe annually for a few years) so that we can all show up and show out in lovely frocks with our handkerchiefs in tow crying like a bride’s mother over these songs that have left us shook as f*ck.

Speaking of being shook, check out who is opening for the band… Freya Ridings. Check her out…powerful voice!

If by chance you just want to be in the area and hang around (there are people that do that), take British Airways or Delta. Use a car service to get you to and from London Heathrow and spoil yourself with a night at the Kensington. Then walk over to RAH and just be somewhere near without being disruptive. Just do it. Stay the weekend, leave on a Sunday. Walk around, be in the energy of historic London…just do it. If you have the resources to just get there…GO!

Are You Serious? What the hell are we gonna do?
RAH has guided tours, tea and much more. While you’re there, hire a car and go to Bath, England. Plan to stay a night there as well. Make the most of it!

BBC Radio 2

So, this is also happening and we’ve yet to have heard who the blessed Earls of Fortune are that got the tickets. But just “For Everyone’s I” as Curt would say, this is taking place. Bookmark it and follow it, you never know what you may see or find out on the day of the show. Gonna be pretty sweet for sure.

Meet and Greets
We get this question for every show. Unlike years past, we just don’t see these like we used to for a variety of reasons. It’s sort of an every man for himself, just ask and see what happens kind of thing. All we can say is for goodness sake, hold on to the no scream policy. Do not freak out around the band if you see them. Keep it cool. For some it’s hard because it’s literally like watching an angel manifest before you. Some may disagree but for those that “know” …you know it’s true.

Travel Fan Team on the Ground
For every show there is a loyal one who usually comes through and provides the coverage that we archive. We all pool our videos, whomever got the best one for each song is what goes online. Everyone uploads their selections to YouTube or sends us a file via email. We don’t know what will happen this time around because that ticket debacle just threw us off. We’re hoping for the best.

What to expect?
The set list we’ve been hearing and hopefully some surprises. We’re checking to see if Mr. Moyer will join because that means Working Hour gets played! Heck yes!!! We’re also hoping the “Broken” ending for HOH will be played as well. That’s one to make you faint…bring your smelling salts and look alive. We can only pray that I Love You But I’m Lost will be permitted to the public at both shows. We’ll see!

Tulsa1

Cheers all, have a great time and stay in touch! We’ll be either within a mile of the venue being present and respectful or reachable by phone. Keep your passport card with you, keep the passport in the hotel. Trust us on that one!

Fans from around the world sporting their merch!

Big thanks to those who shared their videos. Here are some from the past two nights at the Staples Center. Many people literally changed their lives around to be present for this show. Huge thanks for going the extra mile under the circumstance. Some had to give up their tickets and others gave them to fellow fans.

We appreciate those that made those sacrifices as fellow fans. Few words can ever express the power of the fans and what they do to make things happen. What makes it even more special is that Mr. Moyer was there as well providing support on Working Hour! Hope it’s okay to mention this but he just got married to a beautiful lady named Andrea (not ours – but a different Andrea equally as awesome indeed! We’re so happy for him. Be sure to get the link to his band’s music at the bottom of this post. Now, enjoy Working Hour

Congrats to the Travel Fans 17 September anniversary tomorrow – many years on the road non-stop!

Almost Showtime…

IMG_2013
Starting Wednesday night (tomorrow) teams, fellow fans and friends will head out to complete the Tears for Fears Tour 2017. All the travel information we mentioned previous still stands. Hotel suggestions near the venues in Los Angeles, San Jose and Santa Barbara remain the same. If you’re headed to Brasil for Rock in Rio, be sure to tell Marcio de Campos so that he can know you’re there.

This particular fan team does not have any meetups planned for these final five shows of the summer tour season. Several of us feel it’s good to keep a respectful distance with respect to the initial need to pause. If anyone wants to hang out and get a drink before the show, feel free to leave a note on the many fan walls including our Tears for Fears Travel Fan Team board. We’ve all tried to make it easy to connect with others following the band for these music excursions. We’re also focusing on 2018 and the new album to come at this point. Don’t forget to set aside some cash for celebrating that and following them around as future shows are planned.

Safe travels and enjoy the shows!

14 & 15 September Staples Center – Los Angeles
17 September SAP Center – San Jose
18 September Santa Barbara Bowl – Santa Barbara
22 September Rock in Rio – Rio de Janeiro, Brasil

*Big thanks to those who wrote in or literally came up to us in person to send their well wishes without much knowledge of the circumstance. That’s a lot of love. From what we’ve been told, things are going to be okay. Be sure to hug each other and strive to walk in the lessons and love that you learn as fans of this band.

Many of us are still in a state of Euphoria…
Wow…please give me a minute. This show…was just…it felt good. From the hotel to the seats and fellow fans…it felt GOOD! I’d say great…but GOOD in all caps is what works here with the intonation of “MEGA INSANELY GROOOOVY smothered in euphoric bliss.” I’ve had euphoric experiences in the presence of this band since 2010 but this one took the cake! My friends and fellow travel fans felt the same! People spent quality time that night and the next morning discussing how outstanding that show was! It was more than a water cooler moment…it was lunch and dinner as well! Here’s a few snippets from conversation!

“I felt like I was 20 again! They sound just as good as 1985 when I first saw them live!” – Adam H.

“It was like I was in my parents car again hearing them from the first time! They sound just as good!” – Tyler

“From a technical perspective it was excellent…from the lights to the sound…it was great! I’m going to more shows this summer and will be comparing them all to Tears for Fears.’” L. L.

“They Sound Amazing!!!!!” M.W. texting us during the show 🙂

Where is Duluth, GA? Is that near Atlanta? Yes, it’s sort of the same…

I arrived a day in advance, skipping Florida because I was fearful I’d be worn out in the summer’s heat and humidity trying to truck it on time Sunday morning. So, I got there on Saturday after a lavish French tea party (you all know I’m all about a good tea social) for a fellow fan who recently graduated from one of the many Universities in Atlanta. Speaking of Atlanta… the make-up of this city is very different. One might live in Duluth…but you still call it Atlanta. It’s all connected. Duluth is a neighbourhood that touches Atlanta…but I still call it Atlanta. Many people do. In the last few years it has come into its own and has beautiful restaurants, venues and residential areas. Not to mention it is in Gwinnett County which is filled with culture no matter what view one might get of it otherwise. It’s 30 miles up the road from Atlanta city center and it is spectacular when it comes to events (and the parking is usually free). So, everyone was right and Curt said it best when calling it Duluth and noting that people drove in from Atlanta. It’s also noted that it has one of the highest numbers of Japanese speakers/Japanese-Americans in the southeast and hosts Japan Fest annually! 🙂 It is one of my favourite places to visit in the state! So green and serene with lots to do!

Who was there?
When I moved to Atlanta roughly 12 years or so ago, I noticed they played 80s music everywhere. They didn’t play the band’s new stuff, but older cuts and sometimes deep cuts of various albums from Duran Duran, TFF and the like. I’d often hear conversations when the music was played at a grocery store or hair salon…people talking about how much they loved that band. Of course, anytime they said they loved Tears for Fears I had to go on fan duty and tell them all about the online activities and opportunities to still see the band because, “they tour!!” This led to making new friends and keeping people informed via social media re: band things they may miss or what have you. So when all   of these people, new and veteran fans, showed up at the concert I was floored!

I arrived at 6pm on the dot and the awesome Michael Magno, who is a local superstar and tours with various musicians in addition to a great solo career, showed up with his stellar wife Meg, I almost fainted! I was thrilled that they took me up on the invitation! Not just Michael but many of my media colleagues and industry pals from around the city showed up. COOs, VPs and heads of various companies were present and had floor seats. They weren’t trying to just “attend” the show…they meant business! They were there to celebrate the band! So, big hugs and shoutouts to those who took time away to be true fan on a Sunday night (that’s a big deal around here because Monday mornings/the work week in ATL/Duluth, etc is no joke – it starts at 5am and you need all the sleep and rest you can get on a Sunday to get through it).

The Travel Fans
As mentioned many times, a travel fan is one who travels to shows. That’s it. It’s a nickname. On the front row, there were many! On the second row were several others who were local and drove in from various counties up to Duluth. Third row was filled with fans in their own cool TFF designs. It was awesome and the venue looked full!

I was a bit worried for us because everyone knows we stand up and dance for every show. Why not, why wouldn’t we? Would the Hall and Oates fans understand? I turned around and shook hands with several people as they touched my shoulder to ask questions about various things. Some knew that I was the blog moderator and I wanted to make sure to thank them for following along as well as make new friends. I let them know up front that I’d be on my feet the whole time but would leave for H&O as to not carry on throughout the concert. I leave more for courtesy purposes as I’ve come to see that some H&O fans just prefer to stay seated. I’ve heard this from other fans as well. I can’t go for that. 😉 I have to get up and groove. So, hey, let them enjoy the show without me wiggling around to every single song. I also left because…Monday morning. I’ve met H&O before through work functions so I don’t feel deprived of the experience for the most part. Most of my other friends and media colleagues stayed for a bit of time after TFF. They text and tweeted afterwards…they ADORED TFF… Hall and Oats received mixed reviews from those I know.

THE SHOW!!

Let the videos do the talking… Somebody hug Christine Zap and get her a gift card to the TFF Merch store for this! Seriously!

Awesome photos from Adam are on our Instagram page – we just opened a new one because YT was down for a moment and we didn’t want to delay getting this recap online.

Back on the Road… Pause for me…

After the show, many went up to get merch. I felt faint, so I went to sit down. The familiar and strangers came over to compliment my skull dress. That was very sweet.

IMG_2194

Made a lot of new friends and saw a lot of unity that night. The suburbs of ATL really showed up that night hand in hand and all in love with the band and each other. Lots of “Loving” couples representing our great ethnicities and cultures. It was awesome!

Adam danced his way into the 1000s on his fit bit! We all had a good time!

Curt practically called us Peach Cobbler! Now that’s a compliment cause that’s like the official state food down here! I’m all about this Narwhal’s nightie. Can I get that in extra large?

I could say a lot more but I’ll pause here… we won’t forget that night. I, and many others, pray that ATL/Duluth stays on the TFF tour plan for decades! Just keep coming back Roland, Curt and Team! We welcome you here with open hearts!

Meg and Tyler said it all!!!

The band went quickly to Pittsburgh for the Paints Arena show the next morning. It was like waking up from the best all night slumber party and realising the guests of honour were gone! Come back! Come baaaaaccckkk!

We didn’t know a lot of people in Pittsburgh so our stock of contributions is rather low. If you have friends that went to this show let us know. Would love to recognise them and send some shoutouts and thank yous. So many fans got great photos and videos. Be sure to follow these great YT contributors and make new friends!
Shawn Dando captured the intro from a rare angle… stunning!

TGrant42 got Head over Heels…. Amazing!

Thanks to all who contributed to the show recap with photos and videos!

Hope our dream of a fan conference comes to life soon!

Cheers!

Tears for Fears x New York = Love!

This is dedicated to our #TravelFan team member Cindy who for years has followed a number of bands capturing the amazing shows and archiving them with attention and care. You can always count on Cindy aka ConcertChick. She is easy to spot with her gorgeous golden curls and perfect make-up down to the shoes honey! The nail polish and the glam go hand in hand as she represents the superfans of her favourite bands, Tears for Fears being on her list. For the record, she also does a darn good job looking after Duran Duran concerts, who, as we all remember, are good friends of TFF.

We also want to say a big thank you to @80smusiclovr for her follows and reports back on the good, the bad and the tough life of a fan following a band. There are few things easy about this. Also, much love to the fans that had to stand in line for a long time as they entered? Was reading concert notes and understanding the fan experience. Heaven bless everyone who was patient as they made it inside. Venue was massive, eh? 🙂 It looked full of fans and concert goers! Great!!

Sending Good Man Curt some sugar! #Mwaaaah! #FanLove #SweetGestures

It looks like hopping a plane and just showing up but those of you who know the drill understand that just like the band, we too are haulin’ it across country to be present. Some travel alone, some follow as a flock…either way, there’s an unspeakable amount of work involved including taking time away from jobs, family and making a living for ourselves as musicians, writers and industry contributors. We appreciate what TFF does to get to each city because we’re experiencing it as well. Shoutout to the awesome flight attendants who help musicians and fans get from point A to point B with ease! Enjoy this collection of concert clips and relive the amazing memories and magic the band bestows upon us!

Were there any issues? Thankfully only a few!! 🙂
Sadly we don’t always have a smooth sailing as we jump aboard the SS DelaQ to go to the shows. This is a double ticket with a total of 3 sets of musicians… Allen Stone, TFF and Hall & Oates. While our primary focus is Tears for Fears, we understand and respect that there are H&O fans in the audience. We as TFF’s crew tend to stand and dance the ENTIRE time. Given that we are usually in the VIP section that means we are up front in the first 10-15 rows doing our routine like clockwork. With respect to the Deadheads who followed faithfully alongside GD, we, too, have solid routine of movements and swoon the whole show. So, those who may be looking to take a load off and have a seat and a drink are probably annoyed by our enthusiasm. Too bad!

We spend on average $5000 each to travel to handful of shows on these tours. We do not come to sit and have a silent night while the band of our dreams is giving us 110% on stage. No apologies here! Get up and join us or deal with us wiggling around. We paid as well. We also do not believe any venue should follow suit and expect people to stay seated during a CONCERT!! It’s a CONCERT! This is not the OPERA or the symphony where staying seated is expected and respectable. This is a rock concert at the end of the day and we as fans are going to respect the band by standing up and singing along. That’s how we show our love and dedication and we hope others understand that. We do not have a reputation of getting drunk and being insane…we simply stand up and show respect. Please respect us in return.

Kudos to all who stood their ground and sang…especially to those who were not in VIP and got hurled insults because they came to represent. In future, contact us so we can get seats together. We don’t travel in numbers for no reason…it’s for safety’s sake. Goal is to have a good time and build new fan family ties! Continue to enjoy!

Thanks for reading!

As a team of  dedicated fans who travel to follow the band, we’ve been gathering and celebrating Tears for Fears for over 2 decades. In the last 7 years (started archiving our travel in 2010), we’ve made a lot of efforts to be inclusive and keep our fellow fans in the know. Some of our fun includes where to meet up for photos, notifications on the band’s prompts to hang out and spend a few minutes with fellow fans and more. Many of us are back on the road again for #Tour2017. Below is an updated list of the full 2017 Tears for Fears concert schedule (global) and those who have checked-in to say where they’ll be during the tour. Cheers-cheers!

Dedicated to Valerie who will be in Arizona and to Katie who cashed out her 401K (not uncommon) to see the band this year. We wish everyone safe travels and a great time!

Air Travel: We suggest Delta or Southwest – please be sure to join their frequent flyer club programs. There is no extra charge and the perks are worth it. In 2014, we were able to use points each time we wanted to see the band. You can earn enough points for free tickets, free hotel stays and more.

Drummer Genius – Jamie Wollam’s New Website

jamies-site

We love to keep track of and follow musicians that work with Tears for Fears. We’re thrilled the band’s drummer, Jamie Wollam (The Drummer Genius – that’s what we call him as do others), has a new site. Now we can wallow all in Mr. Wollam’s world as we know it’ll be filled with updates and cool information. Thanks are in order here to Dion and Paula Smith who worked hard to make sure this actually happened.

Be sure to visit: http://www.jamiewollam.com/ and follow along on all social platforms to see the latest cool news. Jamie is so much fun and one of the nicest people on the planet. Don’t take advantage of that by sending him a list of wishes but be sure to yell his name and say hey when you see him out on tour! 🙂

Saving the Best for Last, Tears for Fears San Diego #TFF2016 (Tour Wrap Up)

This is dedicated to Lax, our travel fan pal from 2015. He is so hardcore he went to David Lynch’s concert and Tears for Fears all in the same night. He’s been doing shows for quite a while. Glad we got to do a couple with him. Also dedicated to Alan Todd who shared some amazing videos. Shout out to Mr. Mendoza who was also there!

Jason DeBord was in attendance. Long time fans will remember him from San Francisco 2012. Took some great shots and did an amazing write up on the show. Looking forward to sharing his work.

Some really cool things happened at this show. You all may remember Bill from way back when. He’s been with the band for a long time. Bill is a hard worker and is very kind, thoughtful and intelligent. He opened the Humphrey’s show with some bandmates and that was awesome. Thanks to his pal Sammy for allowing us to share this photo.

With that said, we think it’s important to highlight some of the amazing people who make these tours so majestic. Bill is certainly one of those people. On numerous occasions he has gone above and beyond to be kind. We appreciate it. We’re aware that it’s a task to remember faces and names. Not everyone can get a set list or a pair of drumsticks from the band but he, Jamie and others do try very hard to be fair and do extra things like that and it’s always appreciated by the recipients be they a part of our Travel Fan Team or someone who is just joining in the fan shenanigans.

Again, Bobby drove fans from place to place as did Becky (who was responsible for taking care of our travel fan t-shirts that were such a hit). So many people stayed in touch the entire time via email, Twitter and other social platforms. New friendships were made and the pictures say it all. The teamwork was terrific and was noticed!

Mad World (Very similar to the version Mr. Jules did when he was on Stripped Down Live with Curt Smith – we miss that show!)

Steven Mendoza was there too. Is that the same Mr. Mendoza we ran into years ago?

You can find links to all the concert recaps and photos on the reschedule note. Feel free to share your concert experience on the Tears for Fears Travel Fans and Kooks FB page. Get some sleep, replenish your travel fan cash and perch! Also, please see the note below from the moderator to wrap up what has been a really amazing couple of weeks.

*Tour Pause – Closing Note from the Moderator

Very sad I didn’t get to meet many of the new people that flew out to see the band. When the reschedule dates were released they were on days that I had committed to other events. I’ve literally been en route to something 90% of the past three weeks. Also, much like many others, I couldn’t believe the $1000 total to rebook flights. I would rather put that money toward Tears for Fears merch and tour accommodations. It was a very angering experience to see there was absolutely no way to remedy that. For me it was a sign that maybe I should put a stop to the whole “Stop, Drop and Go see Tears for Fears” way of life that I’ve had for the last 6 years. We always say we’re making up for lost time and that’s why we go to such extremes to get to so many shows. Well, maybe that time has been made up?

As I sat in hotels here and there, I was continuously on the phone or exchanging email with fellow fans as we scrambled to see if we could get better seats for those flying such a long way. Some even flew in from the UK (Obrigada Paula). Others drove for hours. It was a lot of work! Despite not being physically present I am terribly exhausted. But it was worth it because many of those very people claimed that the band was in ‘belle forme.’ I’m so glad that people who dedicate a chunk of their year to see TFF didn’t have to break with tradition. The extreme excitement of a Tears for Fears show rushed through not only myself as I logged on at night to pick up video being sent to me but it electrified everyone else as well. It was even with us throughout the day. So many of us were literally in a state of excitement for three weeks.

I don’t know which was my favourite show. If I had to pick I’d say it would be Red Rocks. The energy was just wow! There were some really cool moments for the core team and the ROCSaTears. I’m so grateful that the band took time with those that appreciate their music enough to move heaven and earth to be present as much as possible. I know that inner flame of travel fandom and a sense of peace came over me when I saw Tears for Fears actually smiling together with fellow fans wrapped around them like dolls. We adore Tears for Fears and their families. Nothing beats getting to physically stand with them even if for a brief moment. I felt a so much comfort and relief when I saw the band hugging fellow fans and the numerous interactions on Twitter and in person.

Why So Emotional?
I learned something about myself this time around and that is, I accidentally became emotionally invested in this band and didn’t even realise it. A few others have expressed the same. For those who are feeling “addicted” to the work of Tears for Fears, remember that the band created several albums and you have purchased all of them and perhaps several copies and remastered remixes as well. They hold concerts and you bought tickets and enjoyed every show. This is what they are offering and this is what we’ve got. When we start to ponder what else is available, we are reaching a level that may not be the healthiest way to exist in the Tears for Fears fan world no matter how cool a Tears for Fears museum or fan conference may be.

The band knows many of us have a wish list a mile long that includes everything from a group photo spot at every show to a website with a registered fan base. What they are offering right now is music, concerts and merch. We will bask in the availability of those things and do our best not to get caught up in a dream land filled with visions of Tears for Fears theme nights at Disneyland (yeahhh…that was someone’s wish and what a cool thing that might have been).

In closing…
I do hope that everyone had a good time. It’s really refreshing to see that Curt took note of the front row. I hope that, if anything, Curt can somehow get those front row seats and sell them to fans directly. It’s long overdue that those of us who follow the band religiously should never have to fear that we’re going to end up in the balcony being yelled at by some person who doesn’t even own a copy of ELAHE (let alone have a copy of Tomcats and Mayfield) and only came to hear them sing Shout. You deserve better than that and so does the band.

Long live the good work that Tears for Fears has produced and I pray all of us are able to enjoy it to the fullest in the future. And…don’t forget the flight and ticket insurance! Just keepin’ it real…

Hard to say anything else really…just speechless. As mentioned in the travel fan info, so many fans headed out to this show. The venue was packed. Very grateful we had so many long time travel fans on the ground last night. Huge thanks to those who went the extra mile to support Tears for Fears. There’s a lot to be said about people who dedicate their time and energy to this group. Not enough thank yous in any language to sum up the gratitude felt all around. Cheers all, enjoy the shares below. Be sure to click through, like the posts, and make a new Tears for Fears fan friend…

Thank you Jamie for taking the time and welcome Lindsey R to the crew.

*Drummer Genius Jamie will probably never know or be able to fathom how much he  means to us. Some things are just left unsaid because it’s hard to express. Wishing he and the crew decades of good times ahead and we pray we get another 30+ years to enjoy them.

From Lady Carolyn: “The bag he is holding contains a couple gifts we got for him. Bobby Russell came up with the idea of finding out what brand of drumsticks Jamie Wollam uses and the size he prefers, and signing our names on them with different colored sharpies. Jamie is always giving the fans his drumsticks as precious souvenirs and we wanted to pay him back in some way. While we were at the music store, I saw a beautiful black cowbell, so we got that and wrote appreciative messages on it with a silver sharpie. He loved the gifts and said they were going in his collection. We (Bobby Russell, Silver Kitty, Becky and I….The ROCSatears) are extremely honored. Jamie is such a kind man.”

On that note, there’ve been many nights where we’ve wondered how to repay the band back for their kindness…nice to see he was open to receiving the gifts.
