Andye and Carri’s Travel Fan Experience

While in transit to Sunset Station where the next set of meetups and show were to be  (Carri and the team headed on over to the SF show) I got a distressed phone call. It was Carri…in transit to San Francisco. She explained that she couldn’t find her show tickets. I had feared this being the case since the day she got the tickets. We bought several sets for the team and now ours were in jeopardy. I had extra tickets but I knew others wanted to buy some of them and I knew our show experience should match that of Orange County…and that meant we needed her particular seats. I told her she would most likely have to fly back to LA and help Kai search her home for the tickets. We hung up the phone. I felt sick.

Then I remembered Curt sending me a message that I left my tickets with them. I told him those were just receipts and I was so sorry that such debris was left in the box (good heavens, what else had I left behind? A tear soaked tissue? I dreaded to think). But at that moment, I realised he was talking about Carri’s tickets. I began to shake and tremble dialing Carri’s number…I’d have to explain to her that Curt had the tickets and she didn’t leave them in LA. I braced myself because I knew she was gonna freak out…and she did. I warned the driver that it was about to get loud in the backsteat. Speaking loudly, with long drawn out OMGs, Carri said she kept telling herself to be careful with the tickets but must have forgotten to separate them from her stuff and the band.  I replied to Curt re-confirming that he was right (egg all over on my face, spilling onto my lap). I said something like, “Good man, I’m sorry, those are Carri’s tickets. She got nervous…blahh blaah…” even the driver (who is also a fan) was shakng his head in shame for me. Wow, how embarrassing… :/

SunsetStationI checked into the hotel and casino and started setting up electronics, working remotely on media assignments and juggled fan logistics for those who were coming in early. I was stressed but I knew I had to stay focused. Captain Julian and Alisa (Scurvy Dawg) of WildWorld  were coming in and I (Alice, the Salty Dawg) wanted to be ready to roll for whatever was needed. I took a long walk through the hotel and checked out the pool area. I couldn’t tell if the tiny white chairs were set up for the show or something else. The set up didn’t look the same.

Relieved and embarrassed, Carri was able to retrieve the tickets from the TFF  team later that night (I know lady Tanya was uber helpful in that…and I heard Janice Whaley was too? Thanks!!) Apparently, it had become quite a conversation piece among the band. We were mortified and came to an agreement that “I” will handle all logistics under all circumstances going forward.

221551_10150940126091991_1102388157_o

With that taken care, I went to bed in my new Turquoise Peacock blue TFF shirt and drumstick (I couldn’t find the Captain and didn’t think it was appropriate to hunt for him). Just before that, I lept in the bathtub, swim suit and all (it was new, the pool was closed and I wanted to try it out) then fell asleep with band merch all around me. Silly? Ridiculous? Pft, ain’t no shame in my game, I’ll do whatever it takes to get to sleep after a stressful day like that.

Friday-Monday -The Orzabal Ship comes to life w/Kooks &Shipmates in tow

Friday…
I got up at like 8am, ran downstairs checking every social media platform, my phone, everything… Fans friends had sent me a ton of material and pictures from San Fran. I was clicking this and saving that. Still Josh Debord’s material won out over all and Jeanie Paloma was spot on it making sure we got his contact info.

Tears For Fears Stage Area Andye

I went to the pool area and the concert venue to see how everything was set up for the show. The tiny white chairs from the night before were still there. I did not like this. It looked uncomfy and I was sure we’d be miserable and too close together in the blazing heat of the day.

It got hotter as I stood there. I went over to the staff and got a Cabana because I knew we’d never manage in that heat. Traci showed up, then SheeShee and Mark…and many others…I started drinking…slowly floating into this sleepy state of no-man’s land. I realised, Andye and heat don’t mix…When Mark and SheeShee left I started to pass out…I laid down…and Traci was talking…I heard only 10% of it…and then the next thing I knew I was having a reaction… Not causing a scene I get up…and I ask Traci to follow me in case I need to be rolled to the door. It’s about 2:30pm. I’m headed back upstairs to get benadryl…cause Im looking like a balloon. Then Traci stops talking…I think I hear my name…I’m thinking what the hell is the hold up? I turn around…and I see… CAPTAIN JULIAN ORZABAL… and there I was looking…like…a balloon. Soaked and unhealthy…I start to gasp…

Now we adopted a no scream policy two years ago and I’ve been good if not damn near perfect at not passing out or superfan screaming when I see the band or their families close by. In fact my blood pressure drops and I’m quite civil and cheery when they are around. But not this time. I let out a loud gassppppp and went slowly to the ground. In my head I’m screaming, It’s Hiiiiimmmmmmm. But sanity kicked in and I quickly stood up and shook his hand as if we were about to have a business meeting. It was a lovely encounter.

Mortified and angry with myself for drinking in the heat, I contemplated going to the hospital because I was THAT sick and looking nothing like my online photos past or present. But I scooped myself together and went back for what turned into Cabana nights…

We hung out all afternoon. IT WAS AWESOME!!!! More people arrived…Carri and the San Fran crew made it safely to the hotel and the SS DelaQ party began. I don’t know what more to say. I was fairly speechless…(there’s a video of all the hugging going on at the lower end of the page). We stayed until the pool closed and then it was time for the night time shenanigans.

Carri and the Captain
Carri and the Captain…

We went upstairs to get ready for dinner. I told Carri to just please bear with me because at some point I knew I was gonna cry from gratitude. Didn’t take long, I fell on the bed and wailed…and wailed..and wailed some more. I have admired Captain since I was 14yrs old. Why? That’s between me and G-d. To finally see him…was more than I could bear…I had to cry and get it over with. My ultimate wishes had been fulfilled. Just as KMK asked us back in 2004 on the official TFF fan site, “What would you do with 24 hours and the band…” I said…a resort and a show.. and there I was…living the dream.

Then we went to dinner with Deb and team in tow. Captain went with Rise, Alisa and other pirates to sweet Lady Liz’. We tried to stay up late but I was still sick. Back in the room Carri and I sat in bed looking at each other, Jamie’s drum stick in my hand. Hers on the suitcase. We could barely speak…just staring at videos from San Francisco, watching Pale Shelter and all the songs from Josh and other fans…anticipating the next 24 hours.

Tears For Fears Fan Club Cabana Days
Tears For Fears Fan Club Cabana Days 8am and waiting…

Day of the show. I’m nervous. Where are Roland and Curt? Are they already in the hotel? I get a note from the Captain asking what’s on the agenda for the day. I say, “drinking and cabana time” to be funny. Then I went downstairs to camp out in the cabanas and swimming pool. And that’s exactly what we did. The Cabana teams brought us drinks til 3pm (instead of strait shots mine were mixed with various berries of this, that and the other to prevent any repeats of yesterday). Then Carri and I headed upstairs and started getting ready. Poor Carri didn’t eat a thing. She couldn’t find her contacts and accidentally ate my previously chewed bagels because she couldn’t see hers. I let her deal with her blindness while I pulled out my jewelry and turned on “Floating Down a River” so I wouldn’t get verklempt and forget the words. Cause, remember Curt caught me slip up in Orange County… I was determined to keep that from happening again.

GroupPicture
DelaQ shipmates

We made plans to do a group picture that night around 5pm. People trickled in off and on and the location changed about 4 times. Some came upstairs like Becky (Texas) Candra (New York) Yyvette (Armenia) and her husband. I wasn’t much of a host as I was sidetracked when Curt posted a picture of himself in the Keep Calm and Carry On shirt, a slogan I had been tweeting all day to remedy the confusion and panic of the ticket situation.

Sheila/SheeShee was sweet and kept a group together so at 7pm and we all got crazy shots with Captain Julian. Then we rushed off to the show. Rushing and forgetting my infamous yellow fan, the incredible Captain J comes running over to me and gives it to me. Weeks after that you could see pictures of Julian floating around the internet with that fan in his hand. It’s mine. LOL.

Tears For Fears Merch Andye
Merch!

Merch table was sweet. More items and brightly coloured tshirts. More waterbottles and Carina Round souveniers. You name it, they had it, we bought it…there are very few items left.

!!!The Show!!!
Carina Round didn’t get upset at the audience and was well received. We sat extremely warm and snug in those seats connected together. We were careful because if you moved too much you really pissed off the person next to you. I think my arse fit just perfect which was a relief.

The show started big and bold, Curt right in our faces, Roland to his left just as gorgeous as the day is long and the supporting team of talented guys Charlton, Jamie and CJV blaring on their instruments. Life rarely gets any better than this. EWTRTW and the whole set from before was played… and like clockwork we danced, moved, sang and hit the notes right on time with the band. There were jokes…about dolls. Now, anyone that follows me on Facebook knows I love dolls and have wanted some Tears for Fears dolls since I began collecting in my youth. Roland said that one fortunate person would find a set of dolls and could go backstage afterwards. Now, I believed it. I looked under my chair but Roland then said, “wait, looks like we have a winner in the back…see us after the show.” I didn’t cry but I was effin pissed. I wanted a doll and I wanted to see Roland again. Just for a few minutes.

The Girls
Gorgeous!

More songs played and then afterwards Roland talked about his brother being there and we all screamed “We love you Julian.” Then he said he too had a doll under the seat…that’s when I realised it was the Orzabal humour, the same humour that let me know there would be no garage sale on the lawn of the guys’ homes and I couldn’t purchase the toaster, kitchen wear or socks…yeah, that was me. Now you know. I’m so gullible.

The wind blew a little but Curt’s shirt was wet as was my salwar kameez. I fanned Carri so she wouldn’t pass out, we sipped water between songs as if we were onstage with the band (We need to work on that, come on guys, let us sing along onstage one day in a clap section on Head Over Heels. We’ll clean up good! we’ll practice). I couldn’t get enough of that night despite the heat. Who cares how hot it was…we were with Tears for Fears baby!! Gold!!! It was Gold!!!

After the show we interviewed an gentleman named Graham (originally from Birmingham England) who was escorting his family on the tour. He has been in the US for 33years. He said he played Tears For Fears latest ELAHE for his neighbourhood and his family. They became obsessed with it and travelled from Ohio to the show. We have video of some of the conversation and will try to get it online soon.

TFF's Charlton after the show with Liz, Brigitte and Judi

That night we hung out in the lobby til the wee hours of the night. I think we drank and planned future meetups, fan conferences, etc til Julian went to bed. Then we followed (not with him but to our own beds)… Although I’m sure many of us were up for a big slumber party and I’d have gladly hosted the whole crew in my suite…blankets and a shot of baileys for everyone!!

Sunday was recovery day…back to the Cabana, more drinks, snuggling with each other til we nearly cried. Roland and Curt came downstairs and were on their way out. Then Alisa comes walking out to the Cabana and tells me to shake her hand. She smells lovely and I’m trying to figure out what it is she’s wearing. She says, “I just shook Roland’s hand.” Ahhh so that’s what it was, Roland’s cologne!! The cologne of which we’ve been trying to get the name of for over 3 years!! I start wiping it on me. Then she tells me the story of how she nearly knocked him down because she ran in the door to go get her children. She was scanning the room in a rush and almost ran right past him til she caught herself just before twisting into an upright angle to shake his hand unconsciously. Again, we try not to bother him so not even a handshake is gonna be initiated from us and that’s an order. He shook her hand and she gave up the chase for the kids who by chance came out with me. Alisa can tell the story better than I can. Go on and ask her.

I swear from 10am til 4pm we just hugged and sat in the Cabana and drank. Carolyn drank the Captain’s beer (by accident she says). Deb and I started crying (not necessarily b/c Captain’s beer got nabbed -we made sure he got replacement…poor Lady Carolyn has been deemed the mead nabber since the day). Deb had a great excuse for our tears; she claimed we had a case of the vapors! Then we sang EWTRTW together. I messed it up and we had to start all over again.

Then it got too hot. Time for a pizza party in my suite! Then off to the strip to take care of business…yes, the shipmates running around down the boulevard making it do what it do…hilarious…and hot. I was of no help (I seriously felt useless), melting but majestic running around with the team. We got done late in the night and headed back to the casino to get ready for Monday plane rides. I wanted to die. Why did this have to end?

VegasParkingLot VideoShoot

I scored a cool Hello Kitty doll while walking with Julian. I cherish it. It’s a band cat. And that cat and I curled up in our cushy Delta seats. When I got back, I gave myself a week to unpack slowly, then donated everything to charity as it was Eid, and I perched, sitting ready for the next one…which I trust is in 2014. Plenty of time for us to get ourselves together.

We all sat online with TFF Japan fans and The Philippines’ TFF Kooks. We slowly got back to eating normal and buying luxuries like nail polish. And we’re just waiting patiently cause nothing else matters but G-d and the band right? This is our family and we’re sticking with it.

Duran Duran Fans & Kooks …the not so secret sister travel fan club

Duran Duran Revisits Atlanta
It’s been about a year since we were graced with Duran Duran’s outstanding show. They are reportedly back in the studio preparing another album. But before we dance into the future, let’s look at their amazing past tour and particulary the stop in Atlanta as that’s what I’m most familiar with.

Ingrid is one of the faces you'll always see up front, a true Duran Duran VIP #DDTravelFans
Ingrid  and her travel pal are one of the  many faces you’ll always see up front, true Duran Duran VIPs #DDTravelFans

Travelling Fans
Duran Duran have travel fans just like Tears for Fears. They are a group of VIPs that are registered with the official fanclub and attend performances all over the world. They are an impressive group of people. We were fortunate to get in touch with a few of them, mainly Ingrid and she is just a delight! She and several of the team have been featured countless times on the Duran Duran page and at the Atlanta show were allowed to announce the band. It was quite a moment in superfanland.

I arrived early as always. It had been raining as it always seems to do on concert days in Atlanta. We get all four seasons for sure when certain bands come to town. There we were humid and damp from the elements, people in plastic ponchos covering gorgeous outfits that were carefully put together celebrating milestones in the band’s history. I stood for what may have been an hour in the merch line. Soon enough I got several things…a leather manpurse, Tshirt and bunch of other things. I was grateful for it, caught up in the fandom.

I bought my ticket to the show months in advance through the fanclub. Because I didn’t choose the VIP option I was only able to get as close as “the stage door” as my seat. It’s a great seat but I would have loved to be in box seat or the first 3 rows. I mean, when you know all the songs, all the words, practice dance moves and the like you want to be near the mike, right? So there I was next to the stage door. My friends teasing me that I’m probably going to get to sing. Duran Duran don’t know me THAT well to let that happen, again, this isn’t Tears For Fears, these are their friends. I continued tweeting and the band’s social media group RT’d everything. It was amazing. Something about getting an RT and knowing “they know you’re alive and supporting” is just everything and more.

MDNR opened for them and I thought she was great. She had upbeat lyrics, dressed in fun fashion and her songs were very club-like and modern 80s meets the Millennial. I know some were not pleased but for me she was stellar! She interacted with the crowd while playing instruments, a sort of one-woman show. She was just…FUN! After she left the video began…a long intro to what would be one of the best shows in ATL that year (with all due respect to the B52s at the Fox earlier that summer). The video was of a woman, dressed beautifully in Victorian and Rococo era style dress and hair…running for miles. She just kept running…and that drove people insane. They weren’t sure when it was going to end and the man beside me put on quite a show of his disapproval to the point his girlfriend became embarrassed and asked him to sit down. I think he rather liked the attention. I admit, that video was long and I had wished someone would have come out onto the stage running around in Roccoco attire to sort of bring life to that. But I liked it nonetheless…

We sing with passion at these shows!
We sing with passion at these shows!

Then with a burst of energy Duran Duran came to the stage, playing the set list just as we expected including songs that everyone had requested. The DD social media crew was on it like lighting. I tweeted, “The show is now Live. Duran Duran starts now” along with a picture of the audience from where I was standing and dancing. They quickly retweeted it. There were tributes to issues that fans were going through and several times Simon Le Bon, the Great came over to our side and paid some real attention to us, grabbing Anna’s hand the whole way. The subtle cues and recognitioin didn’t go unnoticed, thank you kind Sir, much appreciated!

Special Moments
Again, one of the travel fans from Los Angeles (Ingrid’s travel pal) on the front row was given the microphone to announce a few fun things the band asked of her. Simon said, “We’ve never met have we?” Which was a lie, any travel fan and dedicated fan knew who she was. She’d been at every show. In fact, she is so well known she’s got as much of a fan club of her own. These girls are hot! They look amazing and always perch up front like loyalist. It’s something to be proud of, I’m certainly proud of them.

“Leave the Light On” was played for a fan who had either died or gone missing during the tour. It’s clear that the band pays attention and checks their twitter feed. This was precious and very important, and again, appreciated.

Also, the band said they’d been to Atlanta more times than any other city on this particular tourimage. It’s true, they’d been there 4 times and with every show the crowds got bigger and bigger to the point it was sold out this time. We can’t wait for them to come back.

This concert was even better than the  one from Oct 2011, if you can believe that. I had a great time. Danced like a soldier of sound and people around me joyfully made note that I didn’t stop singing and dancing… and I didn’t. I held it the whole time, choreography and all that jazz with every song. I made a lot of new friends…many of whom danced along with me.

Johnny's day off Tweet posted to TwitterSo how are they a sister fan club to Tears for Fears?
If you have to ask at this point, you’re gonna get your band fan card revoked. LOL. JT and Curt are friends (remember the infamous twitter pictures?). There was a joint tour at one point and there remains a comraderie so we are happily tagging along with their fans as well, supportive and showing up much like DD fans do at TFF shows. We’re sister fans.

So, both bands have new material underway, looks like 2014 is gonna be bananas!!! Bring it!! 🙂

Thanks for reading,
-Andye

Musical Tribute to the Band & Superfans

Tears for Fears Superfans
Tears for Fears Superfans hanging out at McCabe’s, waiting for Curt in California

Everybody on the Travel Fan Team works so hard to make a peaceful and ridiculously fun experience for all involved. Carri and her gift of getting seats, Becky and her talent for picking perfect shirts, Cammie’s calm nature, Traci’s positive attitude (even if she does argue excessively w/Curt over politics. Mercy!) and our teams in The Philippines, Japan and France who are always very active and promote the band in ways that many might not ever see… Someone took notice of all of that and wrote a song about it!  It’s a very touching song (and in my opinion is as beautiful as the band & their family’s spirits). Roland and Curt, the entire team and their families have been a beaming light for us 365 days a year for over 2 decades…and it’s just overwhelming. We are all steeped in infinite gratitude.

Robert’s tribute to us is here… https://soundcloud.com/rorzechowski/song-for-andye (soundcloud)

This song was originally released on 14 December. Due to the tragedies of the day, we felt it would be best to highlight it another time. May we dedicate this also to the lost children and their friends who may now be using music to heal through hard times. May the innocent love of creativity and art always be celebrated in music programs for all ages. Thank you Roland and Curt for your inspiration, huge hugs to the supporting band members and families and GARGANTUAN THANKS to Robert for creating this tribute!

Tears For Fears Fan MeetUp #7 Sunset Station 2012

**note from the moderator, Andye**

Robert spoke to me one night on Facebook …and asked me a very tough question. He said he knew I cherished both Curt and Roland equally and do not believe in putting one over the other.  I adore their solo work and thrive on the two being together BUT if one of them was going to write a song about me who would it be. I told him this: That’s easy, Roland. I have had the ultimate pleasure of hearing Curt and learning his solo style I almost feel I could predict what he’d write if he wrote a song about me. Although with all due respect, I can’t see why on earth they would (??) Do musicians write songs about fans? Roland, of whom I’ve only had quick interactions and miraculous moments…well, I have no idea what he would write. I think it would be amazing to hear his thoughts about a fan musically. So, there’s my answer.

The Sunflower Club of Japan, one of the longest running (still active) Fan Clubs for Tears for Fears... established in the early 90s.
The Sunflower Club of Japan, one of the longest running (still active) Fan Clubs for Tears for Fears… established in the early 90s.

Robert then asked, well what would you think Curt would write. I said, perhaps he’d mention how everything TFF, CS and RO are my life…this and prayer keep me going…two days later, I find this song in my inbox and twitter news feed. Wow! I tried not to cry…to be tough…and say, amazing job but my eyes were soaked with tears by the time I stood up…and I hadn’t even finished listening to it. I found out other fans felt the same way…

I am humbled and honored that my music was given any consideration at all since TFF is such a tight, innovative, and masterful group whose music will inspire generations to come. I love their music!

Tears For Fears Brasil 2012

The amount of fan collaboration for this particular show went above and beyond a level of impressiveness. It’s hard to know where to start in detailing this incredible event that not only happened in Brasil but was tweeted and updated on Facebook for fellow fans to see.

As soon as we found out that Tears for Fears were going back to Brasil we were barely on the plane for the stateside shows. Can we do it? Can we go? That was the question as we  sat up late at night in California and Nevada. We asked the Asia fans after their show was there any chance they’d get to come to Brasil. It seemed every region’s account was empty. We were spent…not even enough to send one person.

Photo, from Tani F. in Brasil
Fans lining up for show… photo by Tani F.

When the actual date was announced we checked the fan club funds again. Still not enough for everyone…barely enough for one and for the stateside fans the concert was on a holiday. Many couldn’t find a way around it. We’d have to depend on the Brasil team to keep us in the know on this show…and there we found ourselves perched for this amazing event via Twitter, Pinterest and Facebook.

The countdown began. Marcio Campos was named the leader for the Brasil team due to his longtime dedication to fans worldwide. He’s been there for years in the Tears For Fears fan circuit using his resources to store the videos, rare items and music for the regional archives…you name it, he’s got it and continues to collect…In addition, he posts regular Facebook updates, remains calm when fans have “band fits” and is very loving and generous…a true cool man and superfan. We are very grateful for all the work he has done. He works closely with Andye  on fan projects regarding “the Travelling Fans” and their specific needs, logistics and more.

Two days til showtime and Brasil’s Tears For Fears fans were full on with hotel plans and hoping to see the band out and about town.  Sylvia (Arte em Acucar) even made a cake! There was chatter about the other things TFF would be enjoying while there. People were going wild with excitement. Thankfully, no one was hospitalised from too much joy and all fans remained well behaved (at least that is what we’ve been told)

The day of the show, fans woke up early and got ready to line up for the show…Meanwhile, the rest of us perched online; Andye in an Atlanta hotel away from her comical wilderness abode so she could have full, uninterrupted internet service, Carri on a rare day off from work, Candra perched as well (after her favourite shows had gone off) and so many others in many regions including Filipinos who were up before working hours to set up a photo trade between fans far away.

We first heard from leader Marcio. He got  photos of the super stage at the Espaco das Americas (show venue) and lights. Bill (travelling band staff) was also photographed as was the Good Man Curt who made sure Uber Awesome Tanya got her hug from her fans on the travel team. We were ready for show time. Andye squealed 3 mins to 8pm via Twitter Brasil time and Carri counted it down along with other fans. Collen wished Curt a good show and said a few cool words to Carina Round. Then, Brasil’s fans went flashing away taking photos, video and more. We didn’t expect videos but they were there…and we were grateful.*Please do not sell the videos of the band for profit. Watermark your photos and make sure all the collected material is protected.

Marcio snags a photo of the stage equipment before the show…

There were long pauses online as we waited for another photo to surface. So, we chatted amongst ourselves. We were contacted by @RobertJ47 (Ontario) who made public a piece of work he titled “All Over The World. This is Robert’s salute to the band, he mentions that he performed all of the vocals and did his best to replicate the sound of the group. What made this such a wonderful distraction is that it truly is a beautiful piece of music that has background vocals that sound like CS and RO harmonizing. The leading vocals attempt to be Mr. Orzabal’s and it’s a great effort. It was fun to listen to while awaiting tweets and more from the show.

The Show Officially Begins…

And just like clockwork that amazing “walk out” music begins to play. It is a classical piece and we always forget the official name of it. Then Curt appears…then Roland…and Everybody Wants To Rule The World (the anthem of our lives) begins to play…see for yourself.

Tears For Fears -Show Open In Brasil 2012

Set List from Raphael F.

Then the list began…that blessed list of songs…that majestic set of TFF tunes we’ve become accustomed to; opening EWTRTW, a mind blowing Curt Smith on Mad World,  Rocking, Ravishing Roland on Head Over Heels…the whole set of nearly 20 songs with Woman In Chains and Shout closing out the night. Ahhh the excitement, the literal tears…We’ve already placed most of the concert videos on our Tears for Fears & Kooks Travel Fan page (facebook). We’ll add some to  this post as well. If they vanish it is of no fault of our own.

Some very fortunate fans able to get a M&G reported back that Curt and Roland got their hugs sent from the South of France and Oklahoma. Thanks Cristina A.!

we fans wear our VIK Badges to all shows. Marcio was smart and had his signed.

We were thrilled to learn that one of our leaders, Marcio, got one as well. He relayed lovely words and his experience to us via email. Sadly he couldn’t buy any merch. We don’t even know if there was any but the smart chap got his VIK badge signed. Que otimo Primo Marcio!!

Commentary About the Show: The honest truth, not fan gushing:

Fans were  honest about their experience. One fan stated that his favourite moment was when the balloons appeared which surprised Roland. It was a beautiful sight. We stateside will have to borrow that. We tried with sunflowers but they were hard to see in the crowds and not everyone was at the same show. Next time guys…next time we pray.

Sky Live’s photo of the TFF Balloons -this and many other pre-show fan activities were organised by Carolina M. (Big thanks!!!)

The least favourite moment by another fan was something involving Carina Round??…on the song Billie Jean? We didn’t want to mention it because we’re not sure we even understand what happened to make it someone’s least favourite moment. From what we do know there was nothing really “wrong” …they just said it was their least favourite…but that it was “fun” to see and something different in the show. Okay, whatever…

Another “comment” from someone else was that the 2011 show in Brasil was better than this 2012 show only because the set list felt new before and now had become rather stale (apparently he goes to a lot of shows as well)…and that’s something we’ve heard from many fans. Several fanatics appear to be ready for a new set list even more than a new album. While we can wait for a new set of songs, a new “set list” with a mix of other songs from all of the albums (similar to the current mix featured) has been continuously requested.

But let’s look at it like this… can other songs realistically be played anymore? There is no saxophone player right now for “Working Hour.” Roland ain’t gonna take his shirt off and sing “I Believe…” and again, there’s no saxophone. “Mothers’ Talk” and “Cold…” are probably not coming back. “Start of the Breakdown” seems to require a special machine? The list goes on, not everything can be replicated in this day and time…well, maybe Ladybird and Music for Tables (still needs a horn though)… We’re pretty sure the band chose these songs with all of that in mind. Now if some of you all who play instruments well and spend your free time re-making TFF’s songs can get together and join our Fan Club Tribute Orchestra we can submit some work and perhaps one of you will be picked to play at a show or something…wing it on Working Hour in “said” city with all of us following to hear you. Andye’s still hoping there will be a clap section or a Flamenco Dancer on I Believe and Sketches of Pain …we’re all dreaming but this is what we’ve got to work with and THANKFULLY 93% of fans polled are just ULTRA EXCITED that the band is playing at all…

Cristina A and Curt after the show for a meet & greet

In all, there were nothing but really positive accounts and fan stories, people in complete awe and in their happy place alive and well. It was impressive to read. Most of the hardcore fans had great seats. Only one dedicated Fan Travel member was far away from the stage …and it was painful as she should’ve been with the rest of the group.
An interview was released moments after the night’s events concluded. Seeing several local media and intl music mags based in the country take an interest in the band was comforting. We read it, Andye translated it for non-Portuguese speakers and we, the team, started blogging Friday night…

The band also performed another show that was sponsored by Shell Corporation? (if we are wrong, please someone, alert us as to who sponsored it, nothing worse than giving million dollar credit to the wrong company). Here are two snippets of that surprise:

*Note/Funny comment from the blog moderator: I would not ever want to be “surprised” that TFF was playing at an event I am to attend. As soon as I heard that opening music I’d have been on the ground. The last thing we need as fans are heart attacks as our health is already fragile from constant excitement around this music group. I always want to be well-notified in advance that Tears For Fears are playing (as we assume many were in this case). The idea of them just showing up as a gift from the company would overwhelm me into an early grave. LOL. -Andye

Curt also met one of the famous F1 drivers, F. Alonso  while there. You can click here to see the photo. We believe  Sir Alonso came in second according to the sports reports published on Sunday night in the region. Looks like the band enjoyed themselves and had a great time. Curt tweeted his goodbye and says they hope to return, that’s always a very good sign as he is known to keep his word.

captured by Thais Q.

So What’s Next? Looks like a new album is not “out of the question.” We’re thrilled the band is open to the idea. So much new music has been flowing from the group in one way or another…from Curt’s ultra ab fab cool collaborations to Roland’s work (producing?) on other artists’ albums and his brother aka Captain Julian’s band DelaQ’s new album “Into The Blue” …we have a ton of great pieces to hold dear in the archives. It will be a lovely and long awaited event..

RESTORATION * RESTORE YOUR FAN CLUB ACCOUNTS *SLEEP!!

Let’s think about it…the guys have been busy doing this that and the other. It would be nice if they could get some rest, go back to the writing and mix it all up with their magic wands and drumsticks at a production table/studio…maybe release something in 2014. Everyone continues to go bananas over the solo works of both Curt and Roland so maybe there will be a mix of the two…that future forward sound that drove us all mad on TSO and the JunkieXL collab.

From Luandar B. featuring Gregori and fellow Tears For Fears fans ready for the show.

These things (new music) take time so let’s try hard and be patient…a sort of virutal waiting room (sit down, yes, you can). Let’s not poke and tweet the living puke out of them about this subject…a small reminder every now and again that we do want it but bombardment everyday seems…well…uncomfy. We don’t want to upset them. They heard us…they acknowledged it. So give them a year to rest…you know you’re not going anywhere. Every regional fan club will be back to posting info and fun memories, song polls, WISHES FOR MORE MERCH, fan conference plans…and some photos of Curt, Roland and the team’s backsides in no time. So…we can wait…let the band regroup and enjoy the seasons and their relatives.

A Big  Muito Obrigada/Thank you Brasil! You proved yourselves loving and beautiful…we appreciate you and adore your sweet nature. So glad you got to see the band again and we pray they come back. We want many years with this band…long past Curt’s eventual move to Tuscany. We are married to their music and in our cultures we are with them in good times and bad, in sickness and health…til G-d bless, death do we part. This is something fans take very seriously. We want them forever and a day and so we’re not going anywhere. We are here to stay. (iA).

We often refer to the concerts as the “Closest Thing to Heaven.”  Enjoy this video from Mauricio Pinto F, highlighted by Cristina A from the Brasil Team of that very song.

Special Shout Out to the Arte em Acucar team for making these gorgeous sweets! Olha!

Slyvia Pretes Zarth of Arte em Acucar (The Art of Sugar or Sugar in Art) created some lovely edible gifts for the band.
Arte em Acucar even got Curt’s Doc Martins…now you know that’s clever!
We are very happy that the band appreciates the fan teams. We received a tweet from Good Man Curt Smith.

Tears for Fears in Japan 2012 -Juli’s Experience

The Sunflower Club of Japan, one of the longest running (still active) Fan Clubs for Tears for Fears… established in the early 90s.

*Note from the moderator, Andye* This was one of the most detailed and fascinating accounts submitted by a fan for this 2012 Tour. I cried a lot when translating it. It was very touching. Our original goal for Japan was that they remain visible for the whole show… Let the band know they are there…show Curt and Roland that you showed up for the show. Have sunflowers, wear your fan travel shirts or something that will be representative of this ongoing #365TFF theme that we’ve kept for so long so they know the loyal people are present and accounted for. But it went far beyond any of that. Curt and Roland, for whatever reason of kindness, took time out to meet with them. We didn’t expect that at all. Those things can’t be promised. So, when it happened we were floored!! It is beyond a blessing and more than a sweet gesture. There are no words to describe how grateful we are as a team that Japan was received so well.

Please enjoy this blog post in “Juli’s words,” in Juli’s style. She is not a native English speaker but does a darn fine job relaying her info and it is so fun to read. I hope you’ll enjoy this as much as I have translating and helping her with phrases. Juli-Juli you are so loved!

Curt and Juli hanging out. Notice she was smart and wore her #365DaysAYearForTearsForFears Kerffuffle of Kooks shirt ;) oh yeah! She's was representing that night!
Curt and Juli hanging out. Notice she was smart and wore her #365DaysAYearForTearsForFears Kerffuffle of Kooks shirt 😉 oh yeah! She’s was representing that night!

Who is Juli? It’s my online name that I’ve been using for many years. I’m Japanese. A housemaker & freelance DTP operator. Before my marrige, I was a sales engineer and advertising person in an IT company in HITACHI Group (Please buy HITACHI’s merchandise!!). Of course I’m a huge TFF fan. For our honeymoon we went to Bath and London.

The TFF Japanese fan club is called “The Bible of Dreams, a Tears for Fears Fan Site.” It has been known in Japan since 1997 and is fan generated …and one of the oldest TFF fan site in the world. Some old famous TFF fans may still remember me & my site and all the activities we did. BTW actually I wanted to call it “Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams.” But at that time already there was “Johnny Panic’s TFF Home Page.”

After the TFF live show, 19th, Aug, I was sitting at the private area for the acts of Summer Sonic festival Tokyo. I was so nervous. At the very least, I wanted to fix up my makeup and my hair. I was sweaty, too! Except me, some Japanese old & true fans (All of them are my friends and we are called the Sunflower group) were waiting with me.

All of them were nervous like me, we were all shaking and asking ourselves, “Are we in dream now?” We all said yes. Then someone else said, “This is a dream that we can see Curt & Roland!!”

All of this happened like this… ::enter the dream like state, taking you back to day 1 where it all started::

After the press release said TFF will come to Japan this summer, I began to sound to TFF’s record company & Summer Sonic head office that TFF organize autograph session in Summer Sonic festival.

I’ve envied overseas TFF fans that were able to take pics with Curt & Roland. My hope was to give the same chance for Japanese TFF fans, too. But in Japan, for fans to come in contact with foreign Rock artists is so rare. It’s a very difficult thing.

I thought, in this festival, the musician’s autograph session is open well. Though typically young bands do it but big bands like TFF don’t it very often. Summer Sonic head office seemed to check up but as expected both of them didn’t give me answer. So sweet Andye AndinhaNiakan heard my demand and encouraged for us to keep checking and gave us some information in the marketing and media on who to contact and politely ask if a meet and greet was going to happen. I tried and gave up.

Then two weeks before the concert, I recalled that Curt & Roland have a privileges. In Summer Sonic area, every performers can walk around like the public. They can see other band’s gigs, something eat at food stalls (In Summer Sonic, food stalls are almost institution) and when they meet their fans, they can hold an impromptu dialogue with them.

If Curt & Roland do it, by any chance,we can see them…!?

Part II
Our meeting & greeting mission began. I made contact with Andye again. “Can we get together & may I ask Curt do autograph session somewhere in a quiet place?” She said she didn’t know but thought it would be nice…Fortunately, Curt & I had a positive exchange. We spoke to him in the nick of time.

I wrote again to Andye. She answered first saying she understood it is the promoter who grants those wishes, not always the band. But he maybe can see just a few? She didn’t know if Curt can see us (Andye reminds people she is not TFF staff, she is fan like us. Happy and at shows.) but hopes that maybe he would. There were some fans who were furious with us about our plans and we had fights. I don’t want to talk about it. From all of this I learned who I can trust and who are really true fans of the band.

Finally I assembled them & asked them simple self-introductions by English on my BBS. If Curt saw it, he’ll understand a little about them. I sent my all contact informations to Andye too. My cell phone number and my husband’s ones. Andye was quick and responsive to me. She says, “Please decide your clothes & your land mark for the day of the show so Curt will know who to look for.” I selected blue TFF KOOKs fan T-shirt & decided to bring the suggested Sunflower for gig.

582009_444009945638612_389243554_nAndye advised me “The current day, you must keep front row position and you need to have something in English that says “This is Juli from Twitter” so he knows who you are. You can hold it during the show. He will see you in the audience.” I still couldn’t feel easy. I bought a big false sunflower like bouquet and pasted lots of Swarovski rhinestones on it like rain drops.
My husband took a video of me in that I wore blue TFF KOOKs fan T-shirt and had my “Super Shining Sunflower”. I read aloud the message for Curt and Roland in my clumsy English (BTW I’m bad at English especially hearing & speaking are horrible). Needless to say Andye sent the video to them (I really can’t thank her enough!).

Waiting to see the band...holding sunflowers cause they are...The Sunflower club...now that's CUTE! This is the only region where our crowd plan worked.
Waiting to see the band…holding sunflowers cause they are…The Sunflower club…now that’s CUTE! This is the only region where our crowd plan worked.

In Japan, only a bit Japanese true TFF fans have known about this plan. One of them believed in me completely, and worked hard at full blast (I can’t thank this person enough, too). But for the initial period of time,  one of them (He’s my old friend so we can confer each other without any reserve) critisized that my plan was loose and would not work. But when he saw Joycee’s (Joyce PhilsKoosk) pics on the meeting and greeting in Philippines,he changed his thought. Because in Joycee’s pics, Curt and all of them were shining happily… I continued with the plans I had already set up and how the band can have quick meet-up for Japanese TFF fans.

I made a list:
Selecting meeting place, advance booking, saving contact informations of all members, deciding the sign of meet-up… Almost all meet-up members were my old TFF mates or my closely TFF mates. I selected Sunflower as the land mark for meet-up members and asked them “When you go to Summer Sonic Festival, please bring Sunflower.” This is how we became the “The Sunflower club” later.

At the last minute I talked to them about the secret meeting and greeting. Because I didn’t feel sure of myself. Can we see with Curt at somewhere at Makuhari Messe (The venue of Summer Sonic festival in Tokyo) really? Is this really going to happen?

They Sunflower club was so surprised to know we may have chance to meet them. But deep down we were doubtful. My health became bad. I thought “My health goes bad, then no one can do anything…I began this. I have to make sure it goes well.”

KC&CO17th Aug things got worse. I passed out suddenly. I dropped in a spin. It was like severe car sickness. When I moved my body a little, I threw up violently. I was carried to a emergency hospital by ambulance car in night with my husband. My husband posted this news on FB. Andye & my friends worried about me so much (Thank you all!).
Even Curt seemed to know it from Andye, too. If I couldn’t go to Summer Sonic, who can wave my super shining Sunflower instead of me? My husband promised me that he would wear my TFF-T shirt and wave my Sunflower if worse came to worst.

(Japan Fans and Kerfuffles like to jam out to this song and Julie Julie of course)

KeepCalmI was examined, after all diagnosed as peripheral vertigo. I had to get hospitalized only overnight (Lucky!). But ENT doctor forbide that I would go to TFF Live!!
As might be expected I was about to give up all. But anyway I need to moderate our meet-up and need to search the place where we can see Curt at Makuhari Messe.

A note from Curt encouraged me so much. Then, I remembered someone adviced me “Use earplug!” So, my husband …Makuhari Messe! At the near station,we joined together some the Sunflower club members. The consult hall where TFF would play was called “Sonic Stage”.The capacity is about 10,000 people. By the way there were four stages (One of them was outdoor stage). But at the same time y with TFF, on the Mountain stage, Garbage and New Older gigs were scheduled. So many listeners had to pick between…TFF or New Order.

We choose the appropriate place soon. I took a pic there and sent Curt by Twitter. If he can’t find the place, someone staff of Summer Sonic will tell him where is this.

In Sonic Stage was so cheerful. Lots of food stalls. The stage of Japanese comedians. Bar,disco.kids room…At the souvenir shops of Summer Sonic official goods we bought TFF merch (Only T-shirt. I regret!). But! When I returned there after 30 minutes, I was surprised at the bottom of my heart. Because there was the new white tent.”The dispensary” I felt “Summer Sonic Festival is alive!” .

It changes as occasion may demand in a day. My husband and The Sunflower club members are surprised in turn. But my husband made a settlement proposal. “Juli, is there any way to tell Curt where you are?” I began to worry I would have been a true trouble for poor Curt and his i-Phone. I continue to send him notes where we are.
All of this excessive messaging by me could have been avoided if these interconnected social media phones would let me send pictures&location on all platforms. Our wait time of The Sunflower meet-up was approaching. Tentatively, we went to a cafe in the hotel New Otani Makuhari. Most of members gather together here. Of course they had sunflowers as we were supposed to.

225036_338784329547925_470509806_nI saw they were chatting as if they were an old acquaintance. I thought we don’t need to do self-introduction. But I divided out nameplates to them that I had bought and asked them to write their names by English. If we can see Curt, he can call their names. At that time, my cell phone ringed. I still don’t say about that person’s name, but that was…”YOU KNOW WHO”!!!!

Meanwhile, There was the buffet lunch style, but I couldn’t have a lot of food. I was the host so, I had no time to go for tasty dishes! To tell the truth, I wanted to enjoy snacks and cakes and drinks more… When I pinch my second sandwich, my cell phone rang. I heard the tense voice. “Juli, I’m at near station but I got lost. I don’t know how I go to toward Makuhari Messe!!”

“Calm down!” I shouted but she has got confusing already completely.

“Can you figure out where is Makuhari Messe?”

“Never!”

“STROOTH!?” I’m sorry for her. But we were surprised very much that she arrived at the near station but couldn’t find Makuhari Messe. It’s the same situation as or simular situation to someone arrived at Trafalgar Square at London and asked “Where is the statue of Admiral Nelson?”

Probably she was so tired (She enjoyed Summer Sonic TFF Live in Osaka, too) was so feeling heat and was excited so much. And her heart would have beating certainly…”Beat of the Drum”! Just like my heart…

Anyway, now it’s only one of episodes about “The Sunflowers club”. My husband took the phone and for a while he was hearing where she was. He stood up and said.”I’ll meet her at the station!”

Manami's Art from the show...
Manami’s Art from the show…

After a few moments, he brought her into our meet-up. I stood up and offered her a firm and respectful handshake. “How do you do? It’s very nice to meet you at last…MANAMI”. Our little party warmed up but at 14:00 we went our way. “Next time, see you all again at Sonic Stage!”

Some of them went to see their favorite artist’s gig. I then sent Curt our location. My husband & I rested at cafe in Makuhari messe for a while. Then the battery of my cell phone is weakening…then I get message from Curt!! They are coming here now! And he asked me if I would be holding the sunflowers! What a relief! I informed all the Sunflower club members.

On stage, we listened to some tracks. I only remember “Pictures of You” by The Cure,”Ashes to Ashes”.That was David Bowie version.
About 19:10(Japan time). The lights burst bright! The audience broke into a loud cheer! Then…I saw Curt & Roland directly for the first time in my life. I was surprised “Gee! This intro is…Badman’s Song!!”

“Heard every word that was said that night…” Roland’s powerful vocal hit me. Then Curt is getting close near our position…I threw around my “Super Sunshine Sunflower.”Please Curt! It’s me, Juli! Curt did found it. He saw us & my sunflower certainly. At that moment he smiled so brightly!!! My husband,my members and I did thumbs-up in a spontaneous way. Various feelings swirl through my body.My heart is beating so fast. Our dream comes true? Can we see him in real by any chance? And yet,how charming your smile was, Curt!! I became fascinated with him instantly and I can never forget that his smile.

Roland seemed in the best of spirits. He has been smiling ravishingly, too. My sunflower also brighten his face. I’ve loved his melancholy aspect and have drewn lots of drawings of this aspect of him. But I never knew that his smile was so dazzling… Instantly, my love for them grew more than it already was. I found new magnetic sides to both Curt and Roland …to see them indeed was beautiful like Andye said. The second song was “Sowing The Seeds Of Love”.The audience warmed up so much already. BIG chorus!

When Roland sang “I Love a Sunflower”, I lifted up my sunflower high. Later my hubby said me. “Roland was amused by that!”

There were all over Japanese True long time TFF fans. They have waited TFF fir 27 years. When “STSOL” played everyone grooved so much. Almost all of them could sing Almost all of TFF tracks.

When “Break It Down Again” began (Roland made a profound bow) I was so surprised…the audiense sing together! Next “Head Over Heels”, our excitement reached fever pitch. The falsetto of Roland was excellent! The last track,of course Roland didn’t need to sing “Shout” by himself…every fans were singing louder than him.

Both of Roland and Curt were at their finest. We could see lots of their smiles. My sunflower played outstandingly. When Roland played his guitar, I waved very very often it to him (was that an inconvenience to him? We always fear that). Always he noticed and smiled really sweet smiles.

Curt has certainly spotted somebody in this picture... taken at San Fran show by Carri D.
Curt has certainly spotted somebody in this picture… taken at San Fran show by Carri D.

When in gigs we want to believe very offen that musicians can see us,I want to believe it, too. Of course, I also did it to Curt very very often. And he smiled back to me. To tell the truth,I don’t know whether Roland also has known about “The Sunflower plot?” I asked Andye if Roland knows to look for our Sunflowers. She says she does not know. But at least Curt knew who was shaking the shining sunflower for them.

Because my cell phone was dying I could only send one last note to the Sunflower club, “PLZ assemble the place where I took the pic!”  However it was my fatal error, accordingly. A TFF fan who I’ve known only on the Net hailed me. So when a woman came near us, I assumed she’s also my TFF fellow on the Net. But it was absolute my misconception. She said to me in Japanese. “Are you Ms Juli? I’m a staff of Mr. Curt Smith. He asked me ‘Please manage that she and her fellows can see me somehow.’ Will you come with me?” At first I didn’t understand what she said. My husband told me again and I understood. She then brought us 6 wrist bands for back stage.
I checked if all members are with me. We are now 6 members… But OMG! Manami and Maurin are missing!!

TanyaTakesAPhotoMeeting Roland..it was so difficult for me to explain his character. We worry we are a bother but he smiled and let us hug him. From Curt, I got lots of kindness from him. His sensitivity to us was beautiful. I never forget the last handshake with him. At that moment I touched his hand I felt like he understand us and knows our innocent intention. I don’t remember, much else, it became a mysterious blur. My husband says I began to scream to him to “Get Manami and Maurin!!” and I am so sorry. I admit I made this blunder. About Manami, I’m sure I don’t have to tell you this. Anyway without them, how could we possibly see TFF without them? But the interpreter says “We can prepare only 6 wrist bands.” Who will be coming with me? But anyway ,we should assemble members as early as possible! My husband phoned Manami. Other member searched leftover members and I tried to contact with Maurin.

SunflowerClub2Roland
Roland and Juli pose for a picture… again, let this stay here…do not download and repost, thanks! 🙂

The interpreter backed in the back stage and brought on 7 wrist bands (Many thanks! I was a squeaky wheel). One member left the spot too soon. My husband succeed to put through Manami. He beaconed her to hurry and come over. But I couldn’t find Maurin at last. Later I found her poor tweet, “Where are you all?”
Maurin, I’m so sorry!!!! I can’t believe this…

At this point we were 8 people. Immediately my husband gave up his wrist band and decided to wait outside so the others can go in. “I’ll wait for you and will be at Rihanna’s Live to watch them set up for her show. Meet me there afterwards. I could barely say thanks to him before we were whisked away to meet the band. Members and I passed through what looked like a bar. There weren’t any other Japanese except us. We were so nervous. We imagined many others would be there but it was just us! I think no one has forecasted such situation really, except Manami and I.

If you haven't heard any of Roland's jokes...you haven't lived. Here he does a hard core, "They won't forget this one..." sort of prank... as one person said, ...we love Roland. There's only 1 like him in the world
If you haven’t heard any of Roland’s jokes…you haven’t lived. Here he does a hard core, “They won’t forget this one…” sort of prank… as one person said, …we love Roland. There’s only 1 like him in the world

One of us(My most old TFF fellow), seemed cool and relaxed. I wanted to be this way, but she looked alive when Curt appeared at a distance. Each of us looked to each other to fix our make up. We were all nervous saying to each other, “I wanted to fix up my makeup!”
“Me,too!”
“That’s too baad! I’m shaggy-haired!”
“I’m so sweaty!”
“Will Roland come with Curt!?”
I said, I have a feeling, “He’ll come, too”
I’ve had this strange confidence about it.
Because he knows about me and my weird TFF fan site, surely!

Then, Curt appeared on the scene with smile like the Sun. Just like Andye said, he is even more handsome in person. We ll stood and greet him with applause. “Nice to meet you!” We hugged him in sequence. But when we found the person who comes after Curt, we just panicked and froze. There he was “The Legend Man, Roland Orzabal.”

“WoW, Juli! It’s him!”
“Juliiiiiiiii! They are here, Curt and Roland…”
Members screamed individually.
Because in the next breath, I glomped him.
I don’t even think I introduced myself to him.
But one of members told me later that they said, “That’s Juli.” To Roland so he would know who was hugging him.
Roland respond “Ohhh!”
One of members mailed me later. “If I was woman, I could hug him like you!!”
To this day I can still feel their hands and his body. Curt is very firm and fit. Roland is strong and sturdy and when you hug him and he speaks you can feel his operatic voice in the hug. It echoes through his very nice body.
I hugged him around his neck and I had someone take a pic of him and me. Then autograph session and photo session began. Female members breathed down Curt’s and Roland’s neck so male fans couldn’t even get near them. I regretted that I couldn’t talk to them. I lost my notebook for communicating in writing. I wanted to write down what I wanted to say. I can write English but speaking is hard.

A clever female member wrote about her love to TFF in advance, entered it in her smartphone and showed Curt and Roland. They read it heartily. Roland seemed to read aloud it. Except one, we could speak English barely. We had admiration for her good idea. We wished we had done that. I heard a rumour that Roland seemed to kiss on someone’s cheek…but she doesn’t seem to remember it. Who was that so lucky person? You know …giggle giggle! I remember at first Roland stood alone and paced like a butterfly. He made me think of Mr. Bean with a wine glass. (Sorry Roland, it was interesting to watch you thinking)

We then took group picture and I stood right next to Curt. I still remember how he took me by the shoulders gently. And damn if that picture didn’t turn out because the SD card became corrupt. Fans, I warn you, when you get ready to take a picture make sure you have more than one camera and take 2 to be safe.
Suddenly Roland left, the secret meeting and greeting was over. At parting, Curt shaked me by the hand.He watched me, sincerely. I felt that he wanted to remember me as the symbol of Japanese TFF fans. In Japan, meeting and greeting with foreign Rock artist is SO RARE!! If TFF will come to Japan again, probably we can never see them again in such grand style. When we went out ,my husband got close to us. “You are too late!” Really? I felt almost bad for a moment… But I had no energy to feel anything after finishing this gorgeous event and threw myself into his arms! My working hour was over!

Duran Duran at Park Tavern Atlanta (the unofficial scoop)

So, I got the scoop on DuranDuran’s private return to Atlanta for Jezebel Magazine…at least this is how it was relayed to me. I wish like anything I had just believed the advertisement when I saw it rather than doing what I did below. Read on…(but 1st, wasn’t Naomi Campbell just freakin’ brilliant in the “GirlPanic!” video? sizzlin’!)

About 5 days ago (still in a continued appreciation mode for Curt Smith’s (TFF) e-intro to JT) I saw a note on Facebook that read “Win VIP tickets to DuranDuran.” Having not heard anything from the band themselves about a local event I thought the promoters of this event ParkTavern Atlanta, were perhaps willing to send someone to a show in New York or something like that. Given that I’m still in a happy euphoric daze from the Tears for Fears tour and the 15 October Duran Duran Atlanta Chastain show I couldn’t keep asking the media team for time away to “run off with the band.” But being the determined superfan, I looked into it anyway…just to see…

I couldn’t find any information. And my heart was running on skeptical. I simply did not believe Duran Duran was coming back to Atlanta. So, by that Thursday it was “a joke” to me. Tweets, FB updates and other cool things from the band poured in…but nothing mentioned Atlanta. I spoke to Denise in Toronto who was still dancing on the Valentine. I chatted with Sir David Esquire…none of these Duranies had heard about this show or they would have told me. So now I was confirming in my own mind no such thing was going to occur.

Monday afternoon, It’s Halloween 2011: I’m plugging away at media assignments and come across something that needs a second opinion. I walk down the hall to my cwky and after I get my questions answered she says to me, “So you going to Duran Duran tonight?” *enter the thunderstorms and cackling witches on brooms*

All of the sudden the room began to spiral out of control. Like a hellish Halloween nightmare the light fixture seemed to blink and the earth went dark with a moon falling toward me…I had to roll out of the way!

“ohhh my Gaaaahhhd! It wasn’t a joke. It wasN’T A JOKE! IT WASN’T A JOKE!!!” (YES, by now I escalated to a “freak out” in her office. I mean, up stomping around with my hands in the air…then of course I had to sit down cause I felt like I might faint.) My heart was racing. I felt tears swell up in my eyes.  She looks at me with shock and says, “Tell me YOU knew about the show right? You need a ticket?” I sat there at her mercy. “Yes, I need a ticket. I thought it was a joke. I saw the advertising but I thought it was out of state…I thought…” I went on for a few minutes hands flailing and explaining as if she needed to know every detail. She sympathized with me and made some phone calls. Then she turned to me and said, “I’ll know by 6pm.” And with that, I left her office with my head hanging down and slumped back to my desk to recoup and re-concentrate on the tasks at hand. I was so focused that I finished my assignments one hour earlier than usual and then headed out to hopefully hear back from her later.

I did not.

I went home later that night feeling terrible. I fell in the floor after a few tweets and went to sleep. Devastated and determined, I vowed to myself to not ever let such a thing happen again. How could I ever assume that a Duran Duran show may not happen just because the band said nothing about it. Sure, it’s logical, but still, I’m a raqs and rock band superfan I shouldn’ve known better.

The Morning After

I finished up my media assignments and then around the same time tottled back over to the cwky. “Hi! Tell me you went to the show! Please say one of us made it?!” And this is what she said in a nutshell:

It was different than what I expected. We got there on time which was about 8’oclock. No one was there. Just a few people…and they were in costumes. It was like a Halloween party. Then about 10 or 10:30 Duran Duran comes out, gets up and does a cool acoustic set of 4 songs. Simon was there in a big top hat with a tie around it. He was the only one standing. The rest were seated for the most part. One of the pretty girls that’s touring with them now was also there…the one with the long black hair. A slender guy and I think JT was there. They sang 4 songs…asked if they were in Atlanta, which in hindsight was weird…and well, that was about it. We expected more but hey…you know.

We talked more about the details of the music. She’s not a hard core Duranie in comparison to Carri D and Sir David Esquire who could probably feel the vibrations of a Duran Duran song from an iPod 8 people away (just as I can for a Tears for Fears song and have on many occasions but i digress…)  So, she couldn’t really remember the names of the songs. From what I gather the set list was as follows:

All You Need is Now

Hungry Like the Wolf (Acoustic)

Leave the Light on

Reflex

Video of Hungry Like the Wolf, recorded by Cwky& “The Marketing Guy” Posted permission granted by Ryan at Park Tavern 4:35pm 2 November 2011

And now let’s enjoy Girl Panic from the 15 October show (by Duranie atlrio) which was my favourite song performed that night due to the gorgeous young lady on percussion who blew us away with her talent:

Overall, I should’ve been there at Park Tavern. The odd unfairness of that moment makes me queasy and I was sick all night and all morning.  I got sick on the commute into downtown atlanta this morning too. I just should’ve been there. I’d have sat peacefully and well-behaved. If I can sit and listen at a Curt Smith Solo show I can sure as heck behave at DuranDuran… So, here I go throwing myself into the pile of Duranies to legally stalk Atlanta news feeds and hunt down any information that says they’re coming this way again…an intimate venue with Duran Duran is just what I need. I’m perched. I’m ready! Let’s go!

Girl Panic Official Behind the Scenes Info: It is brilliant when bands can take their image and find a company that can push it forward. After these few encounters with Duran Duran and the Duranies I’m blown away with their style and finesse. They look amazing. Looks aren’t everything but first impressions are. I think these guys and their fans have won over a ton of us in the TFF crowd. While we’ll always be groovin’ to Curt & Roland, we are also right there with their pals Duran Duran enjoying fun fashion and things that take you to another place in life. It’s all about fun! And the final product (Girl Panic!) was amazing & brilliant. A clever marketing manager was onboard here and I would kiss their feet with respect. In fact, clever is a petty word:

told ya!

Duran Duran dazzles local Tears For Fears Fans in Atlanta

Tennessee Fan Travelled for Duran Duran in AtlantaHearing Duran Duran on the radio as a toddler followed by Tears for Fears and vice versa has made me and many others complete addicts for their music&shows. So, finally of age to actually attend their concerts, (now having moved  to Atlanta) I can fulfill this “mandatory” fan duty. Their last few visits here have been nothing but phenomenal, fantastic and couple of other expletives starting with the word “f” that may not necessarily be appropriate for a shared blog post. To say they were great…just does not suffice.

Upon arrival to this show I (a Tears for Fears fanatic) alongside hardcore #Duranies found this car, 1st one in the lot, snuggled up in parking spot space #1 glowing with this cool license plate. As superfans do, we crowded around it, taking photos and nodding with approval at each other as if it were a glass of fine wine.

Johnny's day off Tweet posted to TwitterFresh off the Tears For Fears US tour and having followed them online while they were in Brasil (Brazil), I’m still in concert mode. So, when these pictures of @ThisIsTheRealJT surfaced on Twitter followed by TFF’s Curt Smith (@curtsmith) stunning response I knew attending this show was not only mandatory, but also would have been illegal under every shared fan law if I didn’t go. Curt Smith's response to (@TheRealJT)My media conference was cancelled due to 3rd party Egyptian visa issues so off to the box office I went demanding the closest seat in the house. I got 2nd Row seat 21. One of the few in that coveted section. Paid about $90 for it (same as the TFF show ticket in 2010) and more happy about it I could not be…it could have been much much more. I was ecstatic…especially as I pulled into the parking lot to read a re-tweet from Curt Smith saying: Give my love to @ThisIsTheRealJT …and that I promised to do.

After tweeting the license plate (shown above): “I must be in the fan club section because every car here has @DuranDuran license plates.” DuranDuran then responded to me, “That’s sort of terrific. #DuranLive.” And I’m reading this just as some bad ass stretch limo is pulling up next to me at the venue…who knows who was in it…

The Show
Again, I’m finally adult enough to even get into concerts and mature enough to not do a “Beatles scream” the whole time…and thus avoid alarming the band and every human around me. So this was indeed my first-ever Live Duran Duran concert and it blew my mind to say the least! I literally danced the whole time… And some of you may remember when you were a little kid in the 80s…you’re two feet from the T.V. singing into a hairbrush and channelling Simon LeBon’s moves and vocals…well that was me. Live and fully animated (and apparently pure entertainment for the people around me who were determined to give me high fives after the show…was that a stamina award? *giggles*) I did every move I had practiced to their music since 1986 when I first truly understood who they were. And when I say they live up to their legendary name I’m not exaggerating one bit. That was a club party on steroids out there at Chastain Ampitheatre and my 13 year old cousin and I were some of the youngest there…constantly questioned by veteran #Duranies about how on earth we knew the words to those songs.

Neon Trees opened for Duran Duran. This is so wild because I actually contacted their fans regarding the Red Rock Casino show they had…which was where Tears for Fears would play later. Neon Trees were awesome. I’m definitely a new fan of theirs. And Duran Duran did not disappoint…The awesome hits of this band kept coming… Notorious, Rio, Come Undone, secret October, The Man Who Stole a Leopard, Wild Boys, Hungry Like the Wolf…you name it, they sang it all including new songs like “All You Need is Now.” I was enthralled with how good they sound, just like the albums if not better and looking as hot as they did 20 years ago…again, if not better. Their always trendy fashion, the additional band members (including a spicy young lady with red hair on various percussion who has the energy of a live wire) were just through the roof!

Some noteable moments include Simon reaching down into the audience and grabbing the scarf of a fan on the front row…putting it around his neck. Ohhh, as a superfanatic, I know how much that meant to that person. You wait years, decades for things like that to happen and when they do, you melt into total appreciation, star-struckness and remain forever in awe.

The young woman on percussion had a solo during “Girl Panic” and she went to town and back on those instruments…I mean she was wailin’ on it!!! It was so impressive. All that energy…ohh, I want to be her. She made me literally wish to take up the art. I’m considering extending my own cultural heritage of drumming into whatever she was doing on that stage. Just breathtaking (and I don’t mean that in the Seinfeld “You gotta see the baby” sense either, TFFrs may know what I’m talking about here…i..e twitter #fanfun)

She looked fabulous on that stage and her spirit was electric. My young cousin kept asking, “I want to meet her! Can we go backstage, Pleassssee?!! I have to meet her. I just want to hug her! She’s sooooo awesome!!” We are total New Romantics now but understand that Duran Duran shed that image to become something even bigger than that and I’m so determined to make the non-Nigerian side of my wardrobe totally to match that of theirs (in addition to my Tears For Fears inspired ensembles). As you know fans do like to look like their bands with percussion lessons in tow.

There were also the clothing changes. Simon first in a super-fantastic deep terracotta (if not red) jacket with stylings and work on the sleeves…shed mid show revealing broad shoulders covered in a very nice white short-sleeved shirt. You may laugh but these details are important…this is a fan blog…not necessarily a concert review… There was a #DuranLive Tweet screen and I saw a few of my (@papasfans) tweets scroll through. That’s always cool!! Lots of Tears For Fears fans, or enough of them talking about TFF in our midst…so we were right at home!

I could go on and on about that show…but I’ll pause at  that I have to do that again! Can’t wait for the next Duran Duran concert opportunity. They are another band for which I clearly need to set up Fan Travel funds.

After The Show
The explosive Duran Duran concert hours could have gone on and on and we’d have danced til we shrunk out of our pants. But around 11pm we, the supportive members of the Tears For Fears fan team crowded around the stage with the rest of the dedicated #Duranies to scavenge any cups, towels, playlists and other items that often get discarded after the show. One band’s trash is always a Superfan’s treasured stash! (I once took a half eaten key lime pie cake from the Band “Bush” and No Doubt).

Michelle, a hardcore #Duranie who was trying to score a water bottle, cried gently toward the stage hoping to get the items she had her eyes on. Roadies and security weren’t giving out anything. It was pure hell and totally agonizing as we fans live off these unconventional souvenirs. I can’t even list the number of band towels I have or whose I grabbed in 2010 and sleep with every single night…several under my pillow and one tightly tucked under my chin. We as fans gotta work on working with bands and roadies to get these precious items in our hands. They are more highly regarded than even merch items! Michelle finally got her playlist and we all cheered. My cousin Tara leaned over the rail and grabbed some stage tape that had been danced and stomped on by Simon LeBon. I cut it into small pieces and placed it inside the stylish silver programs that were on sale…and I’m happy with it.

I have to give all credit to Curt Smith for pushing me toward the show long before I even had a ticket. Given that there were no funds left in the Tears For Fears fan generated travel account to send all of us to this glorious cousin concert event, I, initially, sacrificed my opportunity and decided to just be the driver to the show vs. being an actual ticket holder. But the pictures and later re-tweets regarding the event were just the push for us to “find the cash” for all of us to attend…and I couldn’t be happier!

Gigantic thanks to Sir David Esquire of Esquire Photography (@EsquirePhotog), CD (@QtcDior28) and Kai who were instrumental in linking the two fan teams (stateside fan generated crews for Tears For Fears and Duran Duran).

Gargantuan thanks to Duran Duran for even replying to my messages, also for always making Atlanta a stop on the tour. For goodness-sake, please come back soon and continue driving we ladies and our Wild Boys completely mad with your music! Cheers!

Video from this show will be on YouTube within 48 hours…if it isn’t already there now…

Tears for Fears in Brasil -Interview

Tears and Kooks International is so blessed to have quite a few multilingual fans. One of those is Andye (Nigerian-Portuguese)  and she translates reviews and videos from the various original languages into English for the stateside fans. Recently she e-met Brazillian born Karina Longo (@mrscarbohydrate) Karina Longoon Twitter while Tears For Fears was on a tour stop in Brasil. Karina was a great volunteer; stepping in during a very busy time. While Andye was translating videos and interviews from Mexico, etc Karina jumped in and translated the interview conducted by a local Brazillian media team. You can see it below in English. Thank you so much (@mrscarbohydrate) for your help! You are an official KOOK!! *Karina was also recently followed by Curt Smith on Twitter*

INTERVIEW WITH CURT SMITH / SHOUT (translated by Karina Longo & Andye Andinha moderator for (@papasfans))

ORIGINAL BY ELIO BANDERA FROM ZERO HORA (PORTO ALEGRE) / SEGUNDO CADERNO (http://www.clicrbs.com.br/especial/rs/clubedoassinantezh/19,617,3511615,Shout.html)

RESPONSIBLE for 80’S HITS SUCH AS “SHOUT” AND “SOWING THE SEEDS OF LOVE”,THE BRITISH DUO TEARS FOR FEARS WILL PLAY TOMORROW IN PORTO ALEGRE.

WITH 30 YEARS  IN THE MUSIC SCENE AND SEVERAL POP CLASSICS FROM THE 80’S AS PART OF THEIR CAREER, TEARS FOR FEARS HOLD THE STATUS OF BEING ONE OF THE FEW BANDS OF THEIR GENERATION WHO’VE PLAYED IN THE SOUTH OF BRAZIL.  TOMORROW (03/10), AT 9PM, PEPSI ON STAGE WILL WELCOME THE GROUP FOUNDED BY CURT SMITH (BASS AND VOCALS) AND ROLAND ORZABAL (GUITARS AND VOCALS), WHOSE NAME WAS INSPIRED ON ARTHUR JANOV’S PRIMAL SCREAM, A PSYCHOTERAPHIC METHOD WHICH CONSISTS ON REACHING OUT YOUR DEEPEST FEARS AND SET YOURSELF FREE THROUGH SCREAMS (AS “SHOUT” LYRICS SUGGEST: “SHOUT, SHOUT/LET IT ALL OUT”).

TEARS FOR FEARS’ POP SOUND WAS KNOWN FOR ACOUSTIC ELEMENTS, KEYBOARDS AND LYRICS SURROUNDING SELF-DISCOVERING THE NEED OF CHANGING YOURSELF AND EVEN LOVE. THE ALBUM ‘SONGS FROM THE BIG CHAIR’, FROM 1985, BEST KNOWN FOR HITS SUCH AS EVERYBODY WANTS TO RULE THE WORLD, HEAD OVER HEELS AND SHOUT (ALL OF WHICH ARE TO BE PLAYED AT THE GIG) REACHED THE TOP OF BILLBOARD.

IN THE EARLY 90’S, A FEW MONTHS AFTER THE RELEASE OF THE VERY WELL ACKNOWLEDGED THE SEEDS OF LOVE (1990), THE DUO’D SPLIT UP, EVEN THOUGH ORZABAL KEPT MAKING MUSIC UNDER THE NAME OF THE BAND AND DECIDED TO RELEASE TWO CDS WITHOUT CURT. IN EARLY 2000’S, CURT RETURNED TO THE BAND. THEIR LATEST STUDIO ALBUM, EVERYBODY LOVES A HAPPY ENDING WAS RELEASED IN 2004.

THE GIG IN PORTO ALEGRE OPENS THE BRAZILIAN TOUR.  ON THE SETLIST, SOWING THE SEEDS OF LOVE, PALE SHELTER, WOMAN IN CHAINS AND ADVICE FOR THE YOUNG AT HEART ARE VERY LIKELY TO BE PLAYED AS THEY WERE IN LIMA (PERU), WHERE TFF PLAYED LAST WEEK, SMITH SPOKE ON THE PHONE TO ZH.

ZH – AFTER 15 YEARS SINCE THE LAST TIME TFF PLAYED IN BRAZIL, YOU GUYS ARE COMING BACK TO PLAY CITIES YOU’VE NEVER BEEN BEFORE. WHAT’S YOUR EXPECTATIONS AND WHAT SHOULD tHE AUDIENCE EXPECT?

CURT SMITH – I’M REALLY ANXIOUS AND I HOPE THEY’RE GONNA BE GOOD GIGS, ESPECIALLY FOR THE REACTIONS WE’VE BEEN SEEING ON THE INTERNET. IT’S ALWAYS GREAT TO PLAY PLACES WHERE WE’VE NEVER BEEN BEFORE. RECENTLY, WE MADE A CONSCIOUS CHOICE OF THE PLACES WE’RE GOING TO PLAY AND NO ONE PUT US UNDER ANY KIND OF PRESSURE. FOR THIS TOUR, WE DECIDED TO MIX OUR MOST WELL-KNOWN SONGS WITH MORE STRUCTURED VERSIONS OF OTHERS.

ZH – WHAT DO YOU RECALL FROM THE CONCERTS YOU’VE PLAYED HERE BEFORE?

SMITH – I RECALL IT WAS A BIT CRAZY. I REMEMBER ONE RIO DE JANEIRO GIG (HOLLYWOOD ROCK, IN 1990) WHEN THERE WAS THIS MASSIVE STORM. ALL THE MUSICIANS AND THE CREW WERE REALLY SCARED OF BEING ELECTROCUTED AND WE HAD TO RUSH THE CONCERT A LITTLE BIT. BUT WE LIKED IT A LOT AND THE AUDIENCE WAS VERY RECEPTIVE.

ZH – WITH TEARS FOR FEARS ON TOUR IS IT SAFE TO SAY THAT IT INSPIRES YOU TO COMPOSE NEW SONGS?

SMITH – YEAH. ACTUALLY, WE ALREADY WROTE A FEW, BUT WE STILL DON’T HAVE ENOUGH MATERIAL TO RECORD ANYTHING. WHEN WE FINISH THE SOUTH AMERICAN TOUR, WE’RE GONNA START WORKING ON IT. I BELIEVE WE COULD PROBABLY FINISH A NEW ALBUM NEXT YEAR.

ZH – DO YOU BELIEVE THAT THAT CELEBRATING THE 80’S  (80’S REVIVAL) WILL LAST FOR A LONG TIME?

SMITH – I DON’T THINK THAT WHAT HAPPENS HERE ISTHE CELEBRATION OF AN ERA, EVEN THOUGH YOU COULD SAY IT’S A FACT THAT LOADS OF GOOD SONGS WERE MADE AT CERTAIN SPECIFIC TIMES. PEOPLE REALIZE THAT THESE TUNES HAVE REAL QUALITY AND THAT’S WHY THEY KEEP LISTENING TO THEM.

ZH – YOU’RE VERY KEEN ON SOCIAL NETWORKS, LIKE FACEBOOK AND TWITTER (@CURTSMITH), AND YOU ALSO PRESENT A LIVE MUSIC WEB SERIES (STRIPPED DOWN LIVE WITH CURT SMITH). DO YOU THINK THAT THE INTERNET CHANGED THE WAY YOU MAKE MUSIC?

SMITH – I BELIEVE IT DID, QUITE A LOT, AND IT ALSO HELPED ME TO FIND OUT HOW TO KEEP BEING AN ARTIST. IT BASICALLY STARTED WHEN I WAS LOOKING FOR A MUSICIAN. I FOUND THIS CELLO PLAYER (ZOË KEATING) THROUGH TWITTER, LISTENED TO HER MUSIC AND THEN INVITED HER TO RECORD A TRACK WITH ME. WE DID ‘ALL IS LOVE’ WITHOUT EVEN MEETING EACH OTHER IN PERSON. IT WAS A FUN EXPERIENCE, AND I INTEND TO DO IT AGAIN.

ZH – TALKING ABOUT TWITTER, BEFORE GOING TO LIMA, YOU WERE TWEETING ON MANCHESTER UNITED’S MATCH FOR THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE (CURT IS A VERY ENTHUSIASTIC SUPPORTER OF THE TEAM). DO YOU LIKE BRAZILIAN FOOTBALL AS WELL?

SMITH – YES. IN MANCHESTER, WE HAVE BRAZILIAN PLAYERS SUCH AS ANDERSON (FROM THE SOUTH OF BRAZIL), AND THE SILVA BROTHERS (FABIO AND RAFAEL, FROM RIO). BRAZILIAN FOOTBALL WAS ALWAYS BRILLIANT AND VERY APPRECIATED IN ENGLAND. ONE OF THE BIGGEST MOMENTS OF MY LIFE WAS WHEN I MET PELÉ BACK IN 1986, WHILE IN MEXICO FOR THE WORLD CUP.

ZH – YOU AND ORZABAL HAVE KNOW EACH OTHER SINCE YOUR TEEN YEARS, AND NOW IN 2011 YOU BOTH ARE 50 YEARS OLD. HAS TIME CHANGED YOUR MUSICAL/PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIP?

SMITH –WE’RE MORE RELAXED… (FRANKLY) NOW, WE KNOW WHAT WE REALLY WANT AND WE DON’T NEED TO QUESTION OTHER PEOPLE. QUITE HONESTLY, WE DO WHATEVER WE WANT TO DO WHEN IT COMES TO OUR RECORD COMPANIES, AND IT MAKES EVERYTHING EASIER FOR US.

–END OF INTERVIEW–
