TFF Oklahoma = Ohhh So Amazing!!

image(Andye’s Experience)

OMG!!! OKLAHOMA WAS OHHHH SOOOO AMAZING!!! After the awesome show in Austin, attended by several members of the #TravelFan team (way to go guys, fandangling plane tickets at the last minute), we found ourselves back in the airport on the way to Dallas Fort Worth. Some of us literally flew into Austin, flew back home and then hopped back on a plane to Dallas. We had  already booked round trip tickets when the additional shows were announced so…we found ourselves adding flights.  Big Shout Out to Becky, Cammie, Carri and Colleen for their unbelievable contributions. Becky literally drove from Southwest Texas up to various parts of Oklahoma and Texas to pick up travel team members and get them to the casino. She clocked 1100 miles in 3 days.

Are We There Yet??? After fighting traffic, Becky and Carri find me in a little corner in the Dallas airport…slightly bedraggled but totally happy. We race off to the Winstar Casino to try and make it for the Friday night #TravelFan mini-meetup, hoping to hug the new people who were flying in for the Saturday show (we like hugs). Traffic was a breeze as we did our TFF sing-a-long to songs we imagined would be on the set list – and no, we’re still not giving it away, few more shows to go. With 3 GPS maps in place, we got to the grand venue with plenty of time to spare. Our room was quaint but still much more spacious than we imagined. We had some last minute changes so we needed a bigger room than originally planned and it worked out beautifully. It was very neat and clean…but just when we tried to get online and do an online roll call, we realised we had very little internet connection. We tried in the corner, near the window, leaning on the foot of the bed, the hallway, outside, everything…nothing. @!#$ how are we going to alert the #travelfans of our mini-meetup spot? Fortunately, we were able to get service on Becky’s phone where we used Twitter to get in touch with everyone. We didn’t have dinner but lingered in the Casino to the tune of slot machines while napping photos of Tears for Fears signs neatly highlighted all over the venue.

Signs, signs, everywhere signs
Signs, signs, everywhere signs

Find the Sign At 11pm (and after a quick pic w/Mr. B) we played a game of ‘Find the Sign’ – that is we drove, ran, walked and crawled through wet grass, parking lots and inbetween fellow TFF fan  gamblers to get pictures of as many Tears For Fears concerts signs as we could find. It’s a lot funnier and exciting than it sounds. Imagine, grown adults squealing with joy every time a Tears for Fears sign is seen, we jump out of the vehicle arms flailing and perch in various positions to get a picture of these gigantic signs while Tears for Fears play on the stereo. The best shot was the Tears for Fears sign near the ‘Big Ben’ clock of this iconic casino with its multiple nations and country corners complete with salutes to Paris, Rome and the UK. We had a blast!!! “Bill!! Hey Bill!!”

No Sleep Marathon Once all the anxiety was drained out of us, and every sign snapped, it was back to the bar for more drinks and in bed by 3am where we sat up ALL night, taking cat naps between watching TV and talking about memories of tours past. With what little internet connection we had, we sent a few tweets, found some more fans who had arrived at the last minute (we weren’t sure if Colleen was going to make it- thank G-d she did. We missed Jeannie P though 😦 ) and checked-in with the band. “Yes, we’re here.”

Jamie -Drummer Genius, Silver Kitty and Bobby #TravelFans

Show day! Bright and early for the daily race, we rush downstairs for the 11am meetup, running into Jamie Wollam the magnificent – Drummer for TFF. “Jamie!!” we squealed as we both stepped out of opposite lifts simultaneously. He looked great! “I just woke up! :)” he said. Didn’t look like it, he was cool as a cucumber and lookin’ QUITE fine. We got some group shots with travel team members, handed out tickets to the new members and looked for a spot to perch. We managed to hug and hangout for nearly 5 hours then scampered upstairs to change and get ready for the show.

The Concert There wasn’t enough Benadryl, Ibuprofen or smelling salts to keep us calm, cool and collected. Our hearts were racing as we walked toward the Global Events Center. We were also blesssed beyond our wildest imaginations to get some “band time.” To say Good Man Curt and Roland were immaculate in their reception and sweet as peaches to us is a huge understatement. They treated us like family and we are forever indebt to their grace and love. After our chat, we went back out into the audience and made sure that any fans that came by to say hi were offered the chance to change their seats, moving them into the VIP section because we happened to have some extra tickets (we usually have about 3-5 extra this time we had 6). We were so excited to give them out. We wanted to make sure that every fan who travelled was close so we could sway and sing together. Nothing like having a team. Many thanks to Traci Smith of TeamCS for her ticket donation as well as Cammie who also made this possible.

Amazing Performance - unreal!
Amazing Performance – unreal!

Lights Camera Action There was a film crew there, we do not know if this was arranged by the band or the venue but I pray there will be purchasable copies of the show. Perhaps it will be used for advertising purposes in 2015? We have no idea but despite there being a clear visible sign that said no videos and photos, this rule didn’t seem to be enforced for audience members. Cameras and video were everywhere and Carri found about 16 that same night online. A few fans in Brasil have already shared others’ videos on their regional TFF pages.

THAT Show…omg… was so FREAKIN’ PHENOMENAL. The accoustics are just stellar and the whole team did such an incredible job on each song. There were some hilarious lyrical moments – we’ll let the band chat on that if they choose. Carina looked and sounded great. She was serving – as they say – on that stage. I mean, just belting beautifully in her cute dress and scarf. Loved it! Roland and Curt shined like the heavenly beings they are with so much amazing crowd interaction…AND SKITTLES!!!!! Threw them right at the crowd, we got orange and strawberry. We are still unsure how in the world they reached us on the 4th row. He threw them toward the end of the show. We had hoped he would but we didn’t really see him doing it as much as usual. When we saw the tiny things spring out from his hand, Bobby and I were like, heck yeah!! Skittles!!!! They really should be an official sponsor, who do we need to call to make that happen? Seriously ::checks contact list:: Lol!

TFF Feel Like Family! There was a lot of interaction at this show. Two fans, one named Patricia who was turning 60 years old, got a happy birthday song during the concert. Roland honoured and recognized attendees, gave some really cool Kooks salutes, honouring fans who flew in from all over the states and beyond. We LOVE THIS!! I mean, we LIVE for those on-stage roll calls. That stuff is so MEGA FREAKIN FANTASTIC I can’t even think of any non fan-speak to describe it. Curt’s waving at fans, coming over to various parts of the stage to wave and and make contact is more than we could ever ask for. We can’t wait for that. The combination of the excellent songs, the well-thought out strategic placement of each one on the set list and all that comes with it, i.e. Charlton, Jamie, Doug and Carina…they pay attention. Somehow they are able to see past those bright lights into that audience and they give their nods in various ways. We appreciate it, we see it, it’s obvious and it is appreciated to infinity. So much love in those shows, it’s no wonder half the travel fans’ new friends came to the front after the event saying, “I’m healed! I’m healed!” These shows are more than entertainment or a cassette tape/CDs come to life, they are theraputic, spiritual services that fill you up and make you feel whole again… they are life changing events and if it was up to us, this would be 80% of our lives…we’d travel non-stop for this band. Their energy and their life’s work is unmatched talent.

Tears for Fears DEFINE the term LEGENDARY. THEY ARE IT! If you haven’t been to a show, put it on your list…you can’t leave the planet til you attend a TFF concert. Tell St. Peter and other saints to hold on…you’ve got unfinished business with the band. Go to a show! There’s are several more… Wiltern, Oakland and Pabst…just GO!!

After The Show There were tears before the show, there were tears after the show…we cried, we hugged, we were a mess…just overwhelmed with joy, steeped in healing vibes, all that and so much more. We have so many people to thank. Ms. Tanya is like the love of our lives, we’ve been admirers of hers since we first laid eyes on her. She is a gem and a treasure. We pray she will always be by “their” side. Mr. Bill, thanks for the conversation and good laughs. To ALL the fans that travelled in, hung out for hours, ate together, roomed together, drove in, carpooled and the whole nine yards, let’s aim to do this again! To Colleen, Carri, Bobby and especially Becky, THANK YOU!!!! LOVE YOU!! Cammie…muuaah! Big hugs to Angie, a long time fan from wayyyyyy back – it is ultra awesome to see and hug those who have been flying out like loyal soldiers of sound.

Curt and Roland continue to give their fans the world! Fan Travel is a unique and incredible experience. We’re so grateful for these opportunities. The band makes this very easy and worth every stitch of effort.

Fan Experiences

Ready to Start (by a lovely fan named Melissa – YouTube post – very cool)

Funny Moments – Bloopers  & Logistical Nightmares I had nearly missed my flight into Dallas due to some changes made at my home airport. There I was in ATL sitting around wondering why I was the only one sitting at the gate. I later overheard a couple say, “honey, our gate changed and they didn’t announce it.” I asked them if they too were headed to Dallas and only then did I get to my correct gate after a long set of testy DMs with my airline of choice for not making the announcement. I was there HOURS in advance so there’s no excuse for no alerts, I’m sorry. I’m not even going to take the blame on that…that could have been a disaster.

7 hours in the Airport I ran into some fellow travel fans just before I began my 7 hour sit in the airport waiting to return to ATL to then hop on a plane to L.A. and we hung out at the lounge and enjoyed re-living the concerts …so no complaints!! I’d do it all over again! Too much fun!

We’re Gonna Do What? There’s nothing like getting quality moments with the band… We literally sat stunned after that show and said, “OMG, did ALL of that just happen?” We keep pinching ourselves. It still feels surreal 🙂

What time is it? Bill Time!!! #TFF #CoolCrew #AfterMidnight

Memorable Phrases Bill!! Hey Bill!! Tannnyaaa, we love youuuu! (fan girl gushing)

OMG, did that just happen? – every time there was band interaction

Where am I? Where are we? What day is it? -happens every tour when you city hop

Ooops, pardon me for (insert silly moment), I haven’t slept yet. -when in doubt, blame lack of sleep

What time is it? We should seriously be sleeping – said at 3am every morning

Okay, who is gonna be bold enough to ask management for a fan wagon? How much are those Mega RVs? -at this point, we need to charter a plane or buy an RV for travel fans. $150 per person, per trip to cover gas and a driver. LOL!

Loving Tears for Fears’ Music: Why so much passion, why do we care?

From the Moderator: Some weeks ago, the fantastic show Tell Me More, which ran on NPR for several years, featured a segment titled “In Your Ear.” This particular episode from the 20th of February was replayed this summer and wow did it touch a nerve.

Over the past few months, at media conferences I’ve gotten into deep meaningful conversations about Tears for Fears with various attendees and media industry pals. Each person has told me amazing stories of where they were when they first heard them. Just this past Sunday, over dinner, an operations director told me she was 14 years old when she first saw TFF on MTV around 1983, the video for the song “Change” came on. “MTV was still very new at the time, ” she said.  “It was the opening sound of the xylophone that drew me in. I was mesmerized by that song.” She also reminisced about enjoying Pale Shelter and couldn’t wait for Songs from the Big Chair. What an impact that album made…and on so many people including Bunji Garlin, a soca artist from Trinidad and Tabago.

(paraphrase) “There are so many things about that song. It just lifts my spirit. There’s serious nostalgia when I hear that song. My childhood days come back into play. I remember when my parents were still together, we were in the same household, whole atmosphere becomes something like dreamlike, I like to dream a lot so I constantly play that song.” ::Click here to listen to his words::

Bunji Garlin

I can truly relate to this. Hearing Mr. Garlin speak so passionately about EWTRTW with the same visions that I have, of being a child with family, many new to the USA, still by my side, long before any of life’s realities challenged hopes and dreams. Everybody Wants to Rule the World, was my first introduction to Tears for Fears at age 5/6 (had just turned a year older, wasn’t even a month into it, a cold winter day on the way to school in my blue English pea coat with red lining listening to the car radio). When I heard Mr. Garlin speak with the same soul stirring memories, I fought back tears because that’s the story of so many in our huge fan circle. So many fans write, tweet, post and share their “why I love Tears for Fears” stories. A number of the reports sound like those of Mr. Garlin. When I speak to people, their recollection is reiterated with the same passion…that soul stirring vision. Gives me happy chills. So many say the band’s music “saved” them from very difficult times in their lives…even preventing some from taking their own lives.

Tears for Fears have countless extraordinary songs. From the chart toppers to the B-sides of Saturnine Martial Lunatic, not to mention both Roland and Curt’s solo work, all of this music gets “replay” time in excess. It’s not just on our digital devices but in our hearts and minds. It comforts us during the wildest times in our lives…the good moments, the bad, the hopeful.

Now, here we go happily again, by popular demand, a new Tears for Fears album to change our lives. It’s a grand addition to our life’s soundtrack. We will remember this moment for years to come. We will talk for years about how we were bracing for it, asking for it and all the interactions and days that led up to it. Hold on and hug each other tight because the magic of their music is about to flood us with new memories and excitement. So, “cheers” to the great mini-tour which starts next week, warm wishes for safe TSO anniversary and sincere hopes for everyone to have a chance to live in the majestic marvelousness that is Tears for Fears Live. Your soul will soar, that’s a promise!

The Hurting on Vinyl…and a TFF CONCERT!!

Well, it’s showtime! About a year earlier than we expected too! Tears for Fears will be in concert on the 20th of September in …wait for it… Thackerville, Oklahoma (@ the Global Event Center)!! Why are we exicted? It’s in the middle of the United States. That means it’s roughly a 3 hour flight max for just about anyone and should be no more than $200 – $300 dollars round trip per fan. Tickets went on sale on Friday and VIP was snatched up not only by fans but also ended up in the hands of third party ticket sellers like ‘Box Office’ (original price $88 per ticket on TM, Box Office total after tax, etc. = $700+ for VIP and $300 for premium). It’s on their site.

Remaining Tickets
Thanks to Bobby R of the Travel Fan Team who got in touch with us very early. Because of Bobby’s efforts we were able to get several dedicated fans in the first few rows of the VIP section. THAT IS HUGE given that so many had issues with the Ticketmaster online service. In some cases, fans had row AA which is third row for this show (the first 3 rows RA-RC are Artist Reserve/Casino according to the establishment and are unavailable for purchase to the general public) but when one clicked “okay” on the ticketmaster site, the site simply froze. It was as if one needed to start all over again. One had to literally try again because the site seemed to auto-release the tickets so you couldn’t get what was originally available. It was extremely frustrating. We do not understand why this happened and we will reach out to Ticketmaster with a formal inquiry. Who knows if it will make a positive difference in the future but hopefully it will help other fans get the seats they need. Several decided, this time around, they probably wouldn’t be going to the concert out of frustration with the ticket situation. It’s quite understandable.

Why Such Short Notice?!!?
We can’t overlook the fact that most of us who follow the band daily were under the impression that there wouldn’t be any shows until 2015. We received comments such as, “Out of the blue, we had less than a week to find extra cash during this challenging economy for tickets!!” For those that experienced a tough time coming up with the cash – so many tweeted us about it – please remember our past discussions on having a Superfan savings account for tickets. If everyone puts aside just enough for 1 (approx $100) ticket that might be the solution in cases where we get surprises like these.

Who Is Going?
Ticketmaster shows that 187 people pre-reserved their attendance by Thursday. After the initial ticket sales, over 350 seats were purchased and following that, more and more. There will also be lots of fans from the 80s (those that are catching up after losing contact for a few years), new faces/their kids and, of course, the die-hards…the long time fans who have made a professional career of following TFF. Some decided to cancel previously scheduled events and late summer holiday/vacations in order to attend. The others…well, quite a few regulars said they just aren’t going. They can’t cancel everything this late in the game and go. So our usual TFF fan Cabana Club will probably not be in session as it wouldn’t be the same without them. We’ve got some other plans on file and we’ll discuss that once we complete a roll call; to be sure everyone has their tickets and the seats of their choice.

I WANT VIP!!
There are still a few VIP seats available at ticketmaster rates. Row AA (third row) is available through third party vendors. VIP North (Curt’s usual side) and South (Roland’s usual side) are still available through ticketmaster. We, the Travel Fan Team, have 3 VIP seats for sale at the ticketmaster price (there is no profit, these are tickets we obtained after seat changes and are the same as what was paid thru ticketmaster).
-1 VIP center (Roland’s side)
-2 VIP South (Roland’s side)
-2 premium seating (center section A)
Inquire via email to ‘Tears for Fears & Kooks’ on FB.

What Does the Venue Look Like?
Click here for seating chart & info on the area plus facts about the casino from a K. Clarkston fan. Look at the video for seat placement reference, it’s very helpful. Goes back 7 rows. RA to VIP Center DD.

to see a standard room at the Casino (We’ve been informed that suites are only available Sun-Thurs, call the Casino directly to get confirmation)

Flight & Accommodation Suggestions:
This really depends on what your ‘TFF Fan on Tour Budget’ looks like… Visit this page to see what options are available. If you can stay at the Casino, then do so. The venue is at the Casino, so you wouldn’t have to worry about traffic coming in from the Dallas/Fort Worth area. You can take a rental car from the airport to the venue or reserve a limo service for the 1.5 hour ride. Uber is most likely available as well. The event center suggests ‘Limo Joe.’ In the past, driving into the venue at this distance cost about $150 by chauffeur/in towncar that seats 4 (each way).

Meet & Greets
Rumours are flying around that there is a meet & greet for VIP ticket holders but we don’t have any such confirmations. Perhaps it’s for those in rows RA – RC but again, that is not a confirmation and in order to keep blood pressures and superfanitis down, the thought should not even be entertained unless a member of the band or management says it’s so.

*Will There Be Any Other Shows? (updated)
Yes, one at Austin Music Hall and 3 @ #ProjectPabst but no other shows have officially been announced at this time. Keep up with the official page so you can be on top of show dates.

If you have any other questions about “fan travel” send us an email to the ‘TFF & Kooks’ FB page. We’ll gladly give the best advice and any permissible info! We understand that you’ve invested a part of your life and cash into this band, we as fellow fans want you to have a smooth flight, a beautiful stay and a great time at the show!

Here’s a great poem from Melanie M.
From “Big Chair” onward,
TFF’s music’s kept me strong.
It’s truly been an inspiration,
Never steering me wrong.

Listening numerous times,
I taught myself to play your songs by ear.
Because of this ability,
My heart is filled with cheer.

Besides enjoying your music,
TFF and solo alike,
I also enjoy seeing you on “Psych”.

“Shawn 2.0”, “100 Clues”,
And “A Nightmare on State Street”,
Now, everything Pineapple is my favorite treat!

This poem’s to wish you a Happy Birthday, Curt, from a fan in New Orleans!

And of course, it wouldn’t be a birthday party unless Curt’s political other half Traci joined in. Loyal as the day is long Traci shows up at concerts military style. She sends her love to Curt in a great message.

Happy Birthday to Mr. Coolness!!! I remember affectionately calling you this in ’09 and said to myself how it just fits you and your world! Your vibe in bass playing and singing is so to my fan heart. When talking with other TFF admirers we find ourselves talking or can discuss aspects of Tears For Fears music, life etc and what we adore from you both. I can tend to be on the shy side often though some may say otherwise but it’s very true. I adore the fact you have taken a shy person like me and helped me enjoy social media from time to time. Because you engage with your peeps it strips away the stigma to what many of us only saw through a distance of stage and interviews. I thank you so much for filling my musical file with your great music. Many other fans may share more in how much they enjoy TFF and your solo but my love for your music is nonetheless. I can feel as though my words can’t express what you bring to my little world and therefore as I want to say them to you my words etc. are not enough. I get nervous or even somewhat overwhelmed to point I could be a fool then I back off and go silent. I thank you again you have worked to get to know me and didn’t run away or push me away. Even as I type this out tears are forming in my eyes because Tears For Fears, both you and Roland’s solo work means so much to me. I will try to share more or better as I can. Please know I respect you, your sense of style, your love for your family and you voice sends me to known joy. Thanks as always Papa S.

It’s Official! It’s Mr. Orzabal – ‘Roland Tweets’

It's official...It's Mr. Orzabal.
It’s official!

Late October…a new ‘Roland Orzabal’ Twitter profile surfaces. Much like the others that seem to appear every few months, we ignored it thinking it was yet another impostor. But on the afternoon of April the 1st…our travel fan team members were pretty sure this was indeed the Good Sir Orzabal himself. By that Saturday morning he was tweeting about Tears and Kook’s New York Branch travel fan team lead Cammie, and her playlist. Also known as C. Horton, Cammie is the creator of the #SexDrugsOperaOrzabal Spotify accompaniment, her fan generated project for the book club that has formed online.

Between Sherlock Silver Kitty Carri D and Cam’s careful attention, we sat in various parts of the world with our chins on the floor. He’s. On. Twitter! As Mr. Nadal, one of two travel fan team leads in the Philippines tweeted, “I still can’t believe @rolandtff is on Twitter. It’s the end of the world and everyone is happy…” Let’s hope the next apocalypse is just as exciting!

Roland quickly got acquainted with his fellow loyalists, many of whom have been a part of his life for years as regular concert attendees and past TFF fanclub members. He began following several and joining in conversations with selfies, verification photos and pictures of his cat, Schro.  We’ll leave it to you to figure out what Schro is short for.

Our top 10 Roland Moments thus far?

Roland's First Selfie
Roland’s First Twitter Selfie

10.The Mirror Selfie – Gasps went out around the world when this was tweeted. The intricate shells, the cultural decor, the floor to ceiling windows…absolutely stunning! For so many it was like looking at the reflection of a heavenly being! People reported they burst into tears, kissed their screens and held their iPhones and iPads to their hearts. It was truly touching.

9. Larousse Wine – Book published by Hamlyn  Noticed on the left side of the desk in the mirror selfie. Five hundred plus pages devoted to wine. For those who’ve already read (or re-read) Sex, Drugs & Opera, you know this book is right up Solomon’s alley.  That got us going…got the succubus going too! 😉
8. The Silver Bones of the Orzabal Brothers /the Skull Masks
7. Roland’s First Hashtags: – Like proud fans we watched Roland navigate through Twitter his way, and tweet his first hashtags.  #FridayReads (What Roland’s been reading), #MadWorldBook (Tears For Fears’ latest project), and #ElvisShouldPlaySka, a little joke about his Graduate days.  And speaking of Graduate…
6. Sulking At The Mention of  ‘Graduate – Honestly, we’d love them to reunite for one show! According to Roland’s tweets, he seems amenable!
5. The Not So Bad hair Day  – As if a bad hair day were ever possible for Roland.  Either way, this was another awesome selfie that sparked other fans to tweet Roland their own photos… and somewhere, singing commenced.
4. The Inner Thigh MachineHe assembled it by himself via Twitter and by the end of the night finally figured out how it worked.

3. The Ultimate “Sleeping” Selfie  – Supernatural creatures certainly know how to take great pictures of Roland!  It turned into deco den for fans; we immediately grabbed it and started colouring it with fun things as if we were 3 years old!  Instead of milk glasses and cookies we had wine and pasta.

2. The Free-Flowing Interaction With Fans – He’s been replying and spending lots of time with everyone online and we are all so grateful!!
1. The fact that he’s even HERE! Talk about party time out of bounds.  Yes! We’re truly appreciative of every minute and he knows it…cause he retweeted it. 😉

What many fans are looking forward to are chats about the book. We’ve got two hashtags going, one of which is #SexDrugsOperaOrzabal (which was used during the Kindle release countdown. Lady Puppin of Brazil won the Kindle download. Para Bems a ela!). Roland also seems to have hinted about an SDO part II with the character Rosa getting a little naughty?! That should be good! It’s certainly an exciting time for all of us, a wonderful opportunity to interact with the Good Sir. And yes, this is all legit, the Good Man Smith said so himself!

Roland’s New Book & a 12″ Vinyl? Yes, Please!

(From Amazon -available in March 2014)
(From Amazon -available in March 2014)

Yes indeed, we got word on Sir Orzabal’s book some time ago and didn’t know when the big announcement was going to take place. There were always rumours, then there was the confirmation and on Wednesday the first reports. We were patient…well Carri was…Andye, not so much (I wanted an advanced copy, lol!!).  So here you have it in all its glory 🙂 , ‘Sex, Drugs and Opera, There’s Life After Rock N Roll’ by the one and only (drum roll please) …Roland Orzabal! It is said to be released on the 26th of March via Kindle (available for purchase on those devices only, to pre-order your copy click here) and then other formats will be released (including a paperback book most likely) on the 4th of May. According to the Good Sir Orzabal, the May editions include iBooks and paper copies at Barnes and Noble (I think that’s how I understood it). He says not sure about the rest but we know in due time he’ll let us know. So sit tight. In celebration of its release, our TFF Travel Fan Team is giving away an Amazon gift card to one fortunate follower on Twitter. We’ll be in touch with the details next week.

Excited? Puleeze…more like biting our nails to the nub, we’re freakin’ thrilled. Inspired by several moments in time, this novel is written by the Good Sir himself. Here’s the background of the book as noted in contactmusic.com’s report. This is what appeared in their article: ‘I was halfway through writing a gothic, country house mystery when, out of the blue, I received an email inviting me to audition for the ITV show, Popstar To Operastar,’ says Roland. ‘It felt strange, I must admit, being targeted like that. I mean, I’d sung a little opera in my youth and had lessons for about six months, a fact I’m sure the producers were not aware of. Anyway, I went along for the audition, enjoyed the experience and got quite excited about the prospect. But the more I thought about it, the more nervous I became; I realised the fantasy was far more attractive than the reality. That’s where the idea for Sex, Drugs & Opera came from. The show might not have been right for me but it provided the germ for an alter-ego, a fictitious character, a semi-retired pop star called Solomon Capri who thinks he can reignite his marriage and relaunch his career not just by appearing on Popstar To Operastar, but by winning it.’ (from contactmusic.com)

Tears for Fears fan walls and group pages lit up like lightening as soon as TFF Fan Travel member Colleen posted the link. Many haven’t been able to calm down since the announcement. To say fans are happy is an understatement. Let’s all be sure to buy a copy (be it via the Kindle download or the second release on the 4th of May). Don’t forget books make good gifts too so get one for a friend. Let the world know your excitement by tweeting, uploading and tagging social posts on all platforms with #SexDrugsOperaOrzabal. You may even win a cool prize for doing so.

BGTo top that off, we have a new 12 inch vinyl to look forward to on the music front. “Ready Boy & Girls” has already gotten quite a bit of buzz with many curious about the title, the visual imagery and what it all means. It’ll all unfold in due time. For now the Good Man Curt Smith said (paraphrase) “Let me be clear…this is not the album, it’s not done yet.” It is, however, a limited edition 12″ vinyl and it looks like it will be available at one of the Record Store Day participating stores. We’ll see…in the meantime all kinds of fainting and falling out by fans has commenced. So take your B12 and enjoy the ride we’ll all know more in due time.

On the California side, Good Man Curt held a few chats this month, answering some fun questions from fans. It was very lighthearted with good-natured questions all around. It was like he just took a moment to sit beside us in our big chair. Gotta love those moments, we cherish them for sure. He also recently shared a great photo of his wife taken by neighbour Lady Bumbleward. We enjoy her online presence (and her Pinterest pins too). The time to catch Good Man Curt Smith online is pretty much all day… but he’s usually up for a quick chat around 8-10pm PST and of course that changes with his workload. He’s very friendly, sweet and kind…and hilarious. So follow (@curtsmith) and join in the online fun.

Reflections of Fans in Band Land 2013

We had endless online fun this year with lots of Pysch interactions and extra media mentions kicking off the start. In March we had a new place to follow the band, Tumblr. They also established an official Facebook page and twitter activity escalated.

Carri's gift of glitter to the 2nd cover for this album.
Carri’s gift of glitter to the 2nd cover for this album.

We celebrated 30 years of The Hurting and as the months went on saw tons of collaboration and notable new bands eager to cover Tears For Fears’ music. We were able to enjoy the behind-the-scenes activities and connect with Spotify where we met the mutual influencers. Though some fans were horrified that anyone would dare touch the sacred songs, the band helped everyone understand how grateful they and the other 50% of the fans were that new groups were showing their appreciation and admiration by covering these untouchable pieces of audio art. To top that, there were a substantial amount phenomenal covers by the band themselves, including Arcade Fire’s ‘Ready to Start’ and more.

Among the communication from the band we were surprised by spontaneous #CurtChats during any down moments that Curt had. This was really generous of the good man as he often incoporated us into his evenings…his sweet angels right by his side completing their nightly homework. It added such a personal touch and an enormous amount of love from the Smith Family to us. We are very appreciative beyond words. We also got to spend time with Curt simultaneously at the KROQ event through the power of streaming video. The holiday show featuring Curt Smith on stage with Portugal. The Man was outstanding. Fans across the USA and beyond stayed up to sync with the time zone and watch. Soon after that were more chances to chat. We loved that! *We did attempt to compile a FAQ page from the questions in 2013 but they added up to more than 255 inquiries+ and the answers are still being archived. No estimated time of delivery on that.

Curt also introduced us to our 2013 Holiday Gift which for TeamCS turned into the gift that keeps on giving. We rolled over some cash from the 2012 project to the Maceo cause. This project was mostly funded by Carri (USA) and Marcio (Brasil). Those large donations were outstanding and are being deducted from the fan account from Maceo’s team monthly. Again, big thanks and what a lovely example of team spirit with Curt as an inspiration.

998720_611496968882665_285871613_nOther plusses from Fans and in Band Land included new music from Alisa and Captain Julian w/their pal Eric Senet, forming Trinity Falls. Curt Smith’s Deceptively Heavy hit home with many, making an impression on old and new fans of all ages.

We are very hopeful about 2014, with fans continuously asking for a tour. We’re certain that if it is profitable for the band to run around to various cities across many lands, they will. We’re not in a rush though. We just want the new music and a merch store, both of which were confirmed by Tears for Fears and in particular Curt Smith. Anything more will be a bonus…a much welcomed bonus even if it’s 2015.

ContestOur gratitude toward the band and their continous interaction and updates are very appreciative from the throwback Thursdays (#tbt) to letting us know the progress of the new music. We even now have a chance to contribute to the remixes. It’s all GOLD to us and as long as permitted we will continue to stand right along side with support and admiration.

Big thanks to the team in Japan who provided artwork and 365 music updates, Juli-Juli and Manami, our fan lives are better because of you. Big thanks to Carri who spends countless hours focused on band news and updates from the sister sites of fans and social media boards and is always very generous in her donations to fan projects inspired by Curt Smith. Shout out to TAO and HUGE THANKS to the Orzabal family for countless interactions and being so down to earth and fun every single time, every single encounter. Our dedication knows no bounds, we are there for them. Cheers to an amazing year ahead inclusive of travel fan team fun in 2014!

The Big News: Cover Songs & Official Album Notice

Roland and Curt Animated
Roland and Curt Animated

Earlier today (after a week of excruciating anxiety by fans world wide anticipating what the 11am press release would relay), Tears for Fears published the following:

The response to our first two covers this year was incredible and extremely overwhelming… Thank you all so much for still supporting us! We’d like to officially debut the third cover song we did when we got back in the studio together… Here’s our take on Animal Collective’s ‘My Girls.’ Listen and watch the video created by Vinyl Williams below. http://youtu.be/GL_N1dVtddM

Second thing, our friend Matthew Dear and the lovely girls of Tegan and Sara did this brilliant cover of Pale Shelter that we’d like to share with you.

Listen now on our Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/tearsforfearsmusic/matthew-dear-pale-shelter/s-thbzk

And finally… we’d like to officially announce that we are writing and recording new original material to be released in 2014!

No, this isn’t “new” for many of us, but man are we extremely grateful for an “official press release.” In addition to the ULTRA cool new cover tunes and shared gifts from their friends, many of us were pretty pleased that there is something “official” to answer those who may not be as ensconsed with the rest of the club. You know those people, asking continously “When is the next album? Will you re-unite and create something new?” Sadly anyone that asks these questions is immediately put into some sort of online corner of shame and horror as fans wail in with “They’ve already done a new album, it was ELAHE! Where the hell have YOU been?” (insert snotty snear) Yeah, people take this band seriously to the nth degree and beyond. Asking a question like that is as “nails on the chalkboard” as “Are Curt and Roland friends again yet?” Even that one gets to me…

Let us forget all that , sweep in the solo and “new” music that was made while embracing ELAHE (our proof of ‘Saving Grace’) and brace for the next album to come…PATIENTLY!

Many of us agreed a long time ago…that no matter when new album is released…even if it’s December 2014 that’s fine…we’ll take it! We will not rush the band, we will not pester the living daylights out of them. We’ll ride this wave of online unity and be the bandfan shipmates we have grown to be. So, don’t forget to follow on twitter (@tearsforfears & @curtsmith). You can join online fan fun by getting involved with @papasfans (our travel fan account). For quite a few of us, this is a way of life, a continuous joy and all are welcomed…as long as you’re acting on your best behaviour. 😉

“Team Curt Smith” #Anniversary

Happy Anniversary Team CS!

16 and 17 September are certainly anniversary concert days for many of us as well as a great anniversary for those who participated in the “Team Curt Smith” project of 2010 (described on the @papasfans twitter profile). We raised $1000 in about 3 weeks time to benefit a project in Haiti organised by TwitChange and a few community leaders in Atlanta. Only $600 or so dollars were accepted from our gift but we were very happy to help a great cause and win the prize which included a welcomed bond with Curt Smith of Tears for Fears of whom we have loved since our youth, some of us, since our toddler years.

cropped-kerfuffleofkooksii51.jpgSince then we’ve been contributing to various organisations and doing our part to make the world a much more enjoyable place for those near and far. Some projects have included small personal donations to the Tory Burch Foundation, Friends of Longacre Hall (that project is now changing to a different location), The Angel Tree program and anything else that we either saw on Curt’s fan page or something tweeted/brought to our attention through his social updates and friends.

Curt Smith has certainly helped bring out the best in us. We’re working hard to continue to give to charity groups, share what we have and be inclusive within fan land. We’re a happy, grateful kerfuffle of Kooks led by a great man, and an outstanding band with great minds and endless talent. Much love to Curt Smith, Roland Orzabal and the entire Tears for Fears team, through this band we’ve realised our dreams.

Cheers!
