Curt Smith continues to leave us spellbound and speechless…except on his birthday when we’re barely able to keep our cool screaming BONNE ANNIVERSAIRE, CUMPLEANOS FELIZ and other well wishes in all of our languages! 🙂 The Good Man’s Kerfuffle of Kooks are an international bundle of joy, always ready to rock be it online or in line before the shows. Our sweet Juli-Juli of Japan leads us in a birthday song 🙂
Little Juli-Juli age 8 – she grew up to be a true superfanatic, kawaii too! 🙂
Here’s a great poem from Melanie M.
From “Big Chair” onward,
TFF’s music’s kept me strong.
It’s truly been an inspiration,
Never steering me wrong.
Listening numerous times,
I taught myself to play your songs by ear.
Because of this ability,
My heart is filled with cheer.
Besides enjoying your music,
TFF and solo alike,
I also enjoy seeing you on “Psych”.
“Shawn 2.0”, “100 Clues”,
And “A Nightmare on State Street”,
Now, everything Pineapple is my favorite treat!
This poem’s to wish you a Happy Birthday, Curt, from a fan in New Orleans!
Superfan Carri adds this great card, sleek and sophisticated…We can all guess who on this iconic imagery, Manami wishes Curt a Happy Birthday from JapanManami’s cat is in on it too! Meow Happy Birthday, Good Man, meow!Lisa, who joined the fan travel team back in 2011 after years of fandom sends her great memories of fun times with Curt Smith
And of course, it wouldn’t be a birthday party unless Curt’s political other half Traci joined in. Loyal as the day is long Traci shows up at concerts military style. She sends her love to Curt in a great message.
Happy Birthday to Mr. Coolness!!! I remember affectionately calling you this in ’09 and said to myself how it just fits you and your world! Your vibe in bass playing and singing is so to my fan heart. When talking with other TFF admirers we find ourselves talking or can discuss aspects of Tears For Fears music, life etc and what we adore from you both. I can tend to be on the shy side often though some may say otherwise but it’s very true. I adore the fact you have taken a shy person like me and helped me enjoy social media from time to time. Because you engage with your peeps it strips away the stigma to what many of us only saw through a distance of stage and interviews. I thank you so much for filling my musical file with your great music. Many other fans may share more in how much they enjoy TFF and your solo but my love for your music is nonetheless. I can feel as though my words can’t express what you bring to my little world and therefore as I want to say them to you my words etc. are not enough. I get nervous or even somewhat overwhelmed to point I could be a fool then I back off and go silent. I thank you again you have worked to get to know me and didn’t run away or push me away. Even as I type this out tears are forming in my eyes because Tears For Fears, both you and Roland’s solo work means so much to me. I will try to share more or better as I can. Please know I respect you, your sense of style, your love for your family and you voice sends me to known joy. Thanks as always Papa S.

The anticipation, fans sitting on the edge of their seats, glaring into computers and mobile devices, watching the calendar, making conjectures as to what adventure Mr. Soloman will get himself into… and what a name… Soloman. A noble name meaning, “peaceful, perfect and one who recompenses.” Will we see that type of character in Roland’s fictional literary friend? Will his adventures with Dr. Sparks make him a new person? It’ll all be answered in ‘Sex Drugs & Opera: There’s Life After Rock N’ Roll by the Good Sir Orzabal himself.
Writing a Book is Tough!
I remember writing my first book. The inspiration for it came during a short residency in California (of course). I had just finished listening to a media leader who was involved with creating one of the most popular music based TV programs at the time. I wondered if he’d ever collab with Roland and Curt. That next season Tears For Fears’ music was indeed featured in one of his shows. I was further inspired and took it as a sign to complete the book at all costs. The painstaking process of writing the book was the most bittersweet agony I’ve ever gone through. Knowing what it takes to get a book published, to put one’s heart and soul into a piece of literature makes me more than eager to read Roland’s work. This is a huge moment for fans…many of whom knew he was writing one (I think we first heard about it post ELAHE tour) but we didn’t want to be pests and beg for a sneak peek or too much info. “Let him finish it…leave him alone…” was the mantra among us for quite a while. Then more tours surfaced …but no mention of the book.
Autographed set lists made into art (Brasil Fan Team). Contact Marcio for info.
We questioned it, what was he writing about? Did he scrap it altogether? What else did he just toss away? Are there pages of music and songs too? It’s a known fact among fans that Tears for Fears b-sides are often (if not more) as outstanding as the works that are published on each album. I mean look at Saturnine Martial Lunatic, if that’s not gold then what is? Not to mention the beloved ‘Tomcats Screaming Outside.’ Listening to either one is a very moving and euphoric experience to say the least. So imagine what we’re about to get in a BOOK! It’s Roland’s mind, his thoughts, his imagination…we’re gonna “go there” with him and sink ourselves into “his world.” It’s the rock literature for which we’ve been waiting…it’s almost here!
Sneak peek?! Seriously? Yes, we’re asking for this to get activated on Amazon.
In honour of this wonderful occasion our Tears and Kooks Intl Fan Club is giving away an amazon download to one of the @papasfans Twitter followers or one who is following @tearsforfears. Our fan account focuses on all aspects of the band’s published work, from tweets to anything they tell us that’s allowed to be put in writing. Originating from a charity project that Good Man Curt Smith was involved in to help the nation of Haiti, we continued with gratitude to create a comfortable hub of ‘band fan info.’ We love to tweet about Tears for Fears and related material, connect with other fans and conduct meetups and other things with the band’s approval. They’ve been exceptionally kind about our activities. We’re always about giving back and that’s why we’re offering a #SexDrugsOperaOrzabal kindle download to a fortunate follower of either account.
Rules:
Tweet us (@papasfans) the hashtag #SexDrugsOperaOrzabal (along with any short, fun message or memory of your Tears for Fears fandom)
We’ll assign a number to each tweet, then pick a number at random on Tuesday night. The winner will be tweeted on Wednesday – the 26th of March.
An amazon code will be emailed to the winner so that they may complete their download.
*You must be following @tearsforfears or @papasfans on Twitter in order to qualify; it’s only fair as there are many interactive fans and we want to honour those who thoroughly support the band (and are kind to fellow fans) to the best of their ability.
*Please actually own a kindle device. We’ll have other prizes (we trust) so you can possibly win again if you don’t have one.
That’s all from band fan land today… Even if you’ve already pre-ordered a copy know that the Good Sir seems mighty happy with the hashtag #SexDrugsOperaOrzabal so tweet it proud, tweet it now!
Yes indeed, we got word on Sir Orzabal’s book some time ago and didn’t know when the big announcement was going to take place. There were always rumours, then there was the confirmation and on Wednesday the first reports. We were patient…well Carri was…Andye, not so much (I wanted an advanced copy, lol!!). So here you have it in all its glory 🙂 , ‘Sex, Drugs and Opera, There’s Life After Rock N Roll’ by the one and only (drum roll please) …Roland Orzabal! It is said to be released on the 26th of March via Kindle (available for purchase on those devices only, to pre-order your copy click here) and then other formats will be released (including a paperback book most likely) on the 4th of May. According to the Good Sir Orzabal, the May editions include iBooks and paper copies at Barnes and Noble (I think that’s how I understood it). He says not sure about the rest but we know in due time he’ll let us know. So sit tight. In celebration of its release, our TFF Travel Fan Team is giving away an Amazon gift card to one fortunate follower on Twitter. We’ll be in touch with the details next week.
Excited? Puleeze…more like biting our nails to the nub, we’re freakin’ thrilled. Inspired by several moments in time, this novel is written by the Good Sir himself. Here’s the background of the book as noted in contactmusic.com’s report. This is what appeared in their article: ‘I was halfway through writing a gothic, country house mystery when, out of the blue, I received an email inviting me to audition for the ITV show, Popstar To Operastar,’ says Roland. ‘It felt strange, I must admit, being targeted like that. I mean, I’d sung a little opera in my youth and had lessons for about six months, a fact I’m sure the producers were not aware of. Anyway, I went along for the audition, enjoyed the experience and got quite excited about the prospect. But the more I thought about it, the more nervous I became; I realised the fantasy was far more attractive than the reality. That’s where the idea for Sex, Drugs & Opera came from. The show might not have been right for me but it provided the germ for an alter-ego, a fictitious character, a semi-retired pop star called Solomon Capri who thinks he can reignite his marriage and relaunch his career not just by appearing on Popstar To Operastar, but by winning it.’ (from contactmusic.com)
Tears for Fears fan walls and group pages lit up like lightening as soon as TFF Fan Travel member Colleen posted the link. Many haven’t been able to calm down since the announcement. To say fans are happy is an understatement. Let’s all be sure to buy a copy (be it via the Kindle download or the second release on the 4th of May). Don’t forget books make good gifts too so get one for a friend. Let the world know your excitement by tweeting, uploading and tagging social posts on all platforms with #SexDrugsOperaOrzabal. You may even win a cool prize for doing so.
To top that off, we have a new 12 inch vinyl to look forward to on the music front.“Ready Boy & Girls” has already gotten quite a bit of buzz with many curious about the title, the visual imagery and what it all means. It’ll all unfold in due time. For now the Good Man Curt Smith said (paraphrase) “Let me be clear…this is not the album, it’s not done yet.” It is, however, a limited edition 12″ vinyl and it looks like it will be available at one of the Record Store Day participating stores. We’ll see…in the meantime all kinds of fainting and falling out by fans has commenced. So take your B12 and enjoy the ride we’ll all know more in due time.
On the California side, Good Man Curt held a few chats this month, answering some fun questions from fans. It was very lighthearted with good-natured questions all around. It was like he just took a moment to sit beside us in our big chair. Gotta love those moments, we cherish them for sure. He also recently shared a great photo of his wife taken by neighbour Lady Bumbleward. We enjoy her online presence (and her Pinterest pins too). The time to catch Good Man Curt Smith online is pretty much all day… but he’s usually up for a quick chat around 8-10pm PST and of course that changes with his workload. He’s very friendly, sweet and kind…and hilarious. So follow (@curtsmith) and join in the online fun.

What else is going on in Band Fan Land? Lots of Art! Our Japanese Travel Fan Juli-Juli has been at it again with some cool pick me ups and jewelry. Beautiful material! Again, follow her on Twitter, she’s got a new Tears for Fears music find each day featuring covers and performances of their music from the vast archives located in her place in Japan. It includes works by all those affilliated with Tears For Fears. We are very grateful for her thoroughness!
Big Thanks to Colleen and Carolyn for this month’s music updates!
Upcoming March 2014:
7 March 2014 – 31st Anniversary of The Hurting (released last year -Did you get your copy?)
8 March – Michael Roland Magno, Birthday (Singer & Fan)
9 March – Richard Quest, Birthday – British presenter of Quest Means Business (this is relative, one of our collaboration wishes)
26 March 2014 – Sex, Drugs & Opera, There’s Life After Rock N Roll by R. Orzabal Kindle release
We had endless online fun this year with lots of Pysch interactions and extra media mentions kicking off the start. In March we had a new place to follow the band, Tumblr. They also established an official Facebook page and twitter activity escalated.
Carri’s gift of glitter to the 2nd cover for this album.
We celebrated 30 years of The Hurting and as the months went on saw tons of collaboration and notable new bands eager to cover Tears For Fears’ music. We were able to enjoy the behind-the-scenes activities and connect with Spotify where we met the mutual influencers. Though some fans were horrified that anyone would dare touch the sacred songs, the band helped everyone understand how grateful they and the other 50% of the fans were that new groups were showing their appreciation and admiration by covering these untouchable pieces of audio art. To top that, there were a substantial amount phenomenal covers by the band themselves, including Arcade Fire’s ‘Ready to Start’ and more.
Photo from Tears For Fears, KROQ & Portugal. The Man archives
Among the communication from the band we were surprised by spontaneous #CurtChats during any down moments that Curt had. This was really generous of the good man as he often incoporated us into his evenings…his sweet angels right by his side completing their nightly homework. It added such a personal touch and an enormous amount of love from the Smith Family to us. We are very appreciative beyond words. We also got to spend time with Curt simultaneously at the KROQ event through the power of streaming video. The holiday show featuring Curt Smith on stage with Portugal. The Man was outstanding. Fans across the USA and beyond stayed up to sync with the time zone and watch. Soon after that were more chances to chat. We loved that! *We did attempt to compile a FAQ page from the questions in 2013 but they added up to more than 255 inquiries+ and the answers are still being archived. No estimated time of delivery on that.
Curt also introduced us to our 2013 Holiday Gift which for TeamCS turned into the gift that keeps on giving. We rolled over some cash from the 2012 project to the Maceo cause. This project was mostly funded by Carri (USA) and Marcio (Brasil). Those large donations were outstanding and are being deducted from the fan account from Maceo’s team monthly. Again, big thanks and what a lovely example of team spirit with Curt as an inspiration.
We are very hopeful about 2014, with fans continuously asking for a tour. We’re certain that if it is profitable for the band to run around to various cities across many lands, they will. We’re not in a rush though. We just want the new music and a merch store, both of which were confirmed by Tears for Fears and in particular Curt Smith. Anything more will be a bonus…a much welcomed bonus even if it’s 2015.
Our gratitude toward the band and their continous interaction and updates are very appreciative from the throwback Thursdays (#tbt) to letting us know the progress of the new music. We even now have a chance to contribute to the remixes. It’s all GOLD to us and as long as permitted we will continue to stand right along side with support and admiration.
Big thanks to the team in Japan who provided artwork and 365 music updates, Juli-Juli and Manami, our fan lives are better because of you. Big thanks to Carri who spends countless hours focused on band news and updates from the sister sites of fans and social media boards and is always very generous in her donations to fan projects inspired by Curt Smith. Shout out to TAO and HUGE THANKS to the Orzabal family for countless interactions and being so down to earth and fun every single time, every single encounter. Our dedication knows no bounds, we are there for them. Cheers to an amazing year ahead inclusive of travel fan team fun in 2014!
Happy Birthday to Curt’s Angel Wilder who turned a year sweeter last week.
Thanks for reading…

One of the first downloads in Brasil by our Travel Fan Team Member Marcio CamposSo, we had a discussion about Curt’s latest album, as we always do. We quickly said, “Let’s just snuggle up with this one and enjoy it on a whole other level now that the meanings of the songs are posted.” The goal of course was to have video dialogue on what each song meant for us individually (pre and post posted meanings by CS) but getting everyone together via Google Hangout is just …well darn near impossible for Japan, France, USA and Brasil plus our new fan friends from Australia. In a perfect world, we’ll do this. For now, let’s just get our thoughts in writing.
Album Title: Deceptively Heavy …that “feels” like something Curt would say. A sort of “Curtism” or one of his comebacks to the many questions and notes he gets all day long on varioius social platforms. So, it was no surprise that many of us were drawn into the fan fare that proceeded the album. He had us at the title. Deceptively Heavy -Curt Smith’s latest solo album
Beautiful Failure -yes, we remember that he wrote it for his daughter. I can’t remember if he sang this in 2011 or only in 2012. Seems like we heard it live twice. I was thrilled sometime later when Curt said it would be included. It’s a very touching song and several of us said it’s just…well, beautiful!
Listening to this feels like we’re having a conversation with Curt…as if he invited us over for tea and was just expressing his feelings toward her and concerns for her emotions. Not wanting feedback or advice, just getting concerns for his preciouos daugther off of his chest. This is a treasure in that he shared something so personal. It’s heartwarming for parents and those who are childless alike.
Suffer The Silence
This feels like advice to the busy bodies of the world, always in someone’s business with commentary or asking questions they already have the answers to but just “need” to be a part of the conversation for the sake of inclusion. It feels like a kind way to say, “Mind your own business…and grow a conscious antenna while you’re at it.” Who knows, the meaning was not listed…and that’s fine. This allows the listener to take the song as it best fits his or her own situation. Regardless, it’s catchy and you can easily find yourself singing it at random. It’s also a piece of therapy after a long day of putting up with the world’s ills.
Hold It Together
This is another enjoyable one. Curt says, “Done for an Indy movie called Meth Head. A couple dealing with one person’s meth addiction. Initially I thought I’d play the addict but Carina did it so much better than I ever could. I’m the voice of reason (there’s a first).”
This is one that we didn’t get a preview of from that film. He told us about it (as much as was legal to release at the time) and we were intrigued. The song itself is aboslutely brilliant, the opening…the whole thing. I mean don’t you get chills? We sure did. It’s a really strong piece that we seriously fear will be overlooked in the music world simply because the world isn’t looking in the right direction. I mean, there’s no reason this shouldn’t get heavy air time. Congrats to Carina Round for her brilliant contribution. This is good!
My Point Being
Curt says: One of the tracks written after my mother died. Having arguments with my brothers about stupid shit & realizing we’re family no matter how much they can piss me off.
Now, we totally got it all wrong at the start. We heard this song not long after his blessed mother passed away. There was a lot going on for many of us. Several fans (including myself) lost family/parents at that time. It was a bitter hell scrambling with those emotions and this rather came at the right time. There was speculation as to what the song was about because at that same time on the fan walls, there was chatter about this that and the other amongst loud cries from many countries wishing for the return of TFF to their areas. It was chaotic. Curt gave some meaningful responses and not long after that this song also came about so we weren’t sure if this was directed toward some of the fan comments (some of which were just superfanatically loud, commanding and outrageous) or something else entirely.
While we respect that it was for his mother we also found it perfect for bringing quiet to the hectic board. Seems like we all went in a peaceful direction right after that.
All Is Love
This is a great song, period. The fan boards all agree, it just feels good. I personally think it works for film and TV. I know I’ve played it as background music at various meetings and gatherings. I see the world as one big film anyway and Curt’s music often works as a coping method for times that just need to be reviewed “standing back” and away from the situation…if that makes any sense. Others I spoke with said again…this just “helps.” We all agree it would be nice to see this used as a part of a “feel good” campaign. I will aim to suggest this for future things in my own media dealings and hope for the best.
Porn Star
Curt says: A song about politics & our President. I was (and still am to a limited degree) a big supporter of Barack Obama, to the extent of gaining citizenship to vote for him. What I’ve realized since then is that the American political system is so broken that the only thing that gets you anywhere in Washington is money. There could be a poll stating that 80% of the country is in favor of something (you’ve seen them) but lobbyists & money will still win the day. I may be in love but he’s always going to go for the money.
This is huge…BIG! Fans loved it. We all agreed it was just freakin’ phenomenal and wanted to get deeper into the lyrics…to truly know what brought this song about. Leave it to Curt to put it into perspective…he spoke volumes with every line and even his opinion of POTUS. It sparked a little bit of political debate but we didn’t spend too much time on it…there was no name blaming or finger pointing by fans of various political backgrounds, instead, just lots of questions regarding the direction of the world and the nation. I must say you also get a good glimpse at how far a passionate CS will go to help a cause. It’s impressive and powerful. Go forth Good Man, Go forth. You have a swarm of people listening and eager for your leadership and opinions. We’ve often toyed with the idea of “What if Curt Smith were President and Roland was Sec of State? Hmm…”
Kook Coffe Mug Well Enough
Curt says: The most personal song on the album. I wrote the lyrics on the flight home from the UK after my mother’s funeral, the song was written to the lyrics. She wasn’t the best mother because of her family background & the fact that we had an absent father, but she did “well enough alone”. Also, to me the phrase summed up her solitary life bringing up three boys – well, enough, alone. Amazing what a comma can do.
Another conversation with Curt it seems…a blessing to hear him speak (or sing) openly about something very dear to him. Listen to the instruments in the background and at what time he chose for them to enter…is that a bagpipe? There’s a march in there…you can see everything in these lyrics. It’s very touching and rather painful. We thought at first this was a song from the movie Meth Head also, somehow we thought it had something to do with that movie, but no this is, as mentioned above, about his mum. We knew it was certainly something heavy…and tough.
Very few of us in the TFF Travel Fan crew have had perfect upbringings and our adult lives have had “enough” challenges. In fact, several of us gathered based on the miseries we experienced as a child and just needed others around us who could relate or “get” where we were coming from. The band’s music pulled us through those crazy times. Not much has been said about this song verbally but you can sort of sense everyone is pensive and going back to another time and place when this song comes on or comes up in discussion.
Heaven’s Sake Iconic ImageHeavens Sake -it just works…what else can you say? While the song sort of highlights the cashing in on Christmas, it can certainly be used commerically on so many things… a lot of Curt’s work is perfect for TV and film as we’ve expressed before. Talk about a life’s soundtrack for the innocent.
Wild
Curt says: About my amazing younger daughter (both my kids are amazing btw) Wilder. I didn’t want to write a song about one child because I’d be in deep shit. This one is about the sometimes trying but mostly adorable contrarian in our family.
This is such a bright song. The instruments and overall make up of it is uplifting and full of thought. It brings about very sweet sentiments. Glad to know it was indeed about his daughter. You can certainly “feel” the love, bewilderment and joy in the relationship between father and fun daughter here. Makes you want to spend a day with them and experience it as well. Bless that family! Huge thanks to Curt Smith for again sharing his loved ones with us. It’s really special and makes us all feel closer to the fashionable Smith Family Rockers.
Mannequin
Curt says: “I love the manic in your kind of crazy” – the title is an amusing play on the lyric & became the inspiration behind the album sleeve. The song itself is about my mother-in-law who also passed away last year. She suffered from manic depression/bi-polar disorder her whole life, but when she was up she could be one of the funniest people you would ever meet. I prefer to remember her that way.
We had no idea what this was about. Was it a reference to the cover, that gorgeous statue of a doll in the Ben Sherman shirt? My first thought was how I personally felt about superfan Carri…the contagious mega-excitement in her written words and yet how calm she is in person but on paper you’d never know she was so tranquil, much like the starting lyrics. It’s rather fun settling in with both. Others said they had no idea what to think about it…all wanted to know exactly to WHOM and WHAT was this song referring? We never expected an answer …besides, we just totally loved jammin’ out to this song any chance we had. I personally can’t do that anymore. I just have too much respect for his wife and family that it makes me feel kind of odd rockin’ to her legacy, again if that makes any sense at all…I don’t know.
Secrets
Reminds me a little bit of his song “Coming Out” which is one that many of us listen to when we travel to Los Angeles…a sort of preparation for being in Curt’s presence…calms us down.
The meaning of this song is not listed so we’ll just take it as it is. For me, it’s “keep your mouth shut…not everything needs to be televised and broadcast…whatever the heck it is.”
We only spoke to about 20 people and the concensus remained consistent. The album is MUCH brighter LITE-er to a degree than “Halfway Pleased.” It’s also much more dancable than Mayfield…and perhaps one of the more enjoyable albums in our Curt Smith solo collection because you can do so much with it. Deceptively Heavy has something for everyone in a major way. It’s commercial/film/TV ready, it’s club fit and fan club perfect!
Tell us your feelings about the album and don’t forget to look out for the hard copies coming to Amazon! Can’t wait!
Becky is a singer, a dancer and a mega Tears for Fears Superfan. She also likes Skittles.
Rebekah “Becky” “Becks” is the fun and fancy free lady we met through Janice Whaley via Curt Smith’s twitter feed. She was also the winner of the 2012 Tears for Fears Tour countdown trivia contest. Long before that and long after Becky was active online with a cheerful and supportive attitude.
In 2012, she contacted us about t-shirts and consulted on the slogan and design. After some approvals from higher authorities in the TFF/Curt Smith camp, our Kerfuffle of Kooks & Roland Orzabal Superfans shirts were approved. These t-shirts became quite trendy in regional circles and were seen on fans in Japan.
Travel Fan Fashion evolves…can’t wait for the next set of official merch.
Becky has been a fan since the very early 80s around the time of the band’s official start “The Hurting.” She says the music helped her deal with a very difficult time in her life. When she found Curt Smith online after a YouTube search she jumped aboard the band wagon with full speed.
It was still raining after a week long of heavy rains and floods. Yes, Manila included. And TEARS FOR FEARS is having a 2-night concert at The Big Dome on August 10 & 11!
I was driving that Thursday morning and i told myself that if the sun comes up at around noon, I will call Amur, Jan, Gie & Lori and will have dinner at Shangrila Hotel. Why there? I had the feeling TFF would be there – I dunno…I just “felt” it. At noon, the sun was shining bright….after more than a week of no sun! It was a sign. 🙂
Joyce A’s art of Curt Smith
At 6pm, I was already at the hotel and asked for a valet parking (’cause I didn’t want to stress myself looking for a parking slot). I went to the powder room and decided to wait there for Amur and Gie. My iphone alerted me for a notification from CURT SMITH! My heart jumped. I had a hard time reading the whole message ’cause i forgot to bring my eyeglasses! LOL I had to ask Amur to read the message for me. Mr. Smith asked: “How many Manila KOOKS are there?”
A lot of things were on my mind I couldn’t absorb what Curt was saying. I thought he was asking how many of us were there at the hotel. I even looked at Amur wondering how did Curt know that we were at the hotel? So I said: 5 – then changed my mind – 6. Then changed my mind again – 7. (section removed for the sake of email/text privacy, long story short, these 7 people were notified that they would be able to have a few moments after the show to speak with Curt)
Dinner near the Band, can’t beat that…Manila, Philippines…
We headed to the lobby and decided to stay and have dinner there. We all thought: Lucky if we’d be able to see TFF that night but if not, all’s good. We were already on Cloud 9 after learning we were going to get to speak to Curt after the show.
At 7pm, while waiting for our food to arrive, Jan asked: “Is that Charlton Pettus?” I said: “Yes! – oh no, I have the feeling they will go down and spend some time there!” My third eye was working that night! After a few minutes, Jan said: “Oh no, it’s Curt Smith!”
And yes, it was indeed Mr. Curt Smith!!! The whole group (Amur, Jan, Rica – Jan’s wife, and Gie) started to approach Curt who was all smiles.
Me? I was there, glued to my seat ’cause i froze! After a couple of minutes, i started to join the group.
From afar, i could hear Curt say: “Oh Joyce, my textmate!”
That made my knees weak i almost fell to the floor! My heart even stopped beating! Believe me, the whole time we were w/ the Good Man, i didn’t utter a word to him! Where did my tongue go????

We spent that Thursday night listening to some good music, having dinner while the whole TFF group was at the next table. Yes Roland Orzabal was there too but we were all behaved and noone had the guts to approach Roland. I wanted to, but I was having butterflies in my stomach. I had with me the sketch I made for Roland in 2011. I desperately wanted to hand it to him personally. Finally, I stood up. Amur asked where i was going. I said: “I’m going to Roland” then i started to walk.
My friends were surprised and Amur even shouted: “Hey!”
I didn’t look back – i was afraid that if i look back, i’d be going back to my chair and do nothing. I thought: if i go back and think of the things i’d say to Roland, i’d stammer and it would be worse. I also thought: Roland is the elusive one – I won’t let this moment pass doing nothing.

I was standing beside Roland and politely said: “Hi – sorry to disturb you but i just would like to give this to you. It’s a simple present i made.”
Roland: “Wow! Thank you.”
Me: “Btw, i’m Joyce”
Roland: “Joyce….nice name. Btw, i’m Roland” he offered his hand.
Me: “I know!” 🙂
Roland: “What is it?” (referring to the envelope i handed to him)
Me: “It’s a simple sketch i made for you”
Roland: “Can i take a look? Oh, but i won’t be able to see it. I don’t have my eyeglasses”
Me: “It’s big – you can see it”
He opened the envelope and took out the sketch.
Me: “It’s ink on paper”
Roland: “Wow! Amazing! I look the same!” (wide smile)
Me: “Of course!”
Roland: “Can i have it?”
Me: “It’s for you!”
Roland: “Thank you! It’s beautiful!”
He opened his arms for a hug and kissed me. One of the best nights of my life! Dreams do come true. ❤
The Initial Release
On this day 11 years ago (11 September 2001), the beloved Roland Orzabal’s solo album Tomcats Screaming Outside was released. This was also a horrific day in world history as a force (origins still truly unknown) that brought destruction to the United States overshadowed a number of fantastic accomplishments that took place around this time. The world was unable to focus on anything else, many completely missed this release. May those who lost someone during the senseless game of politics find peace quickly…
Tears for Fears Everywhere We Go
Coincidently, this album’s lyrics and sentiment cushioned the signs of the times. Tears For Fears as a whole have remained not only in touch with “the people” but also ahead of their time. Carrying the band’s name alone, Roland’s impeccable esp slipped into later works. The albums were not only damn good but miraculously comforting for the events that were to come. Pop culture, technology and media in general began putting bits of Elemental in their productions i.e. The Real World on MTV -Boston & New Star in the movie Threesome…the list goes on. Roland was very much engaged and intertwined in society. Though subtle, “we saw him” and remained connected as much as possible…even through his supposed love of mucking around the kitchen.
From the Moderator -Andye’s notes:
I’m still unsure how on earth I missed the original release. I believe it was due to a distraction I had at the time, I was about to leave the country and had become quite focused on musicians from my immediate relatives’ culture —Cheb Mami, Cheb Khaled & Rachid Taha. I always wondered if any of these guys would collaborate with TFF the way Cheb Mami had with Sting. Anyway, I found the album 1 year and 1 month to the day of the initial release…at Best Buy on Cumberland Parkway in Smyrna Georgia just minutes from Atlanta. Every time I go into a music store I have to see if they’ve stocked Tears For Fears. I just have to. As always, I slowly scanned the O-P-Q-R-S-T aisle…and then…I saw it!! There was Roland Orzabal blurred out on the cover of a CD.I gasped loudly, snatched the album ( the last one mind you) and pressed it close to me, hiding it even… as if someone was going to knock me down and kill me for it. That was it for that afternoon. The rest of my day was spent listening to that album and trying to find out where on earth the fanclub had moved (I would live in a fan club HQ if I could). It was almost like finding a long lost friend at random and taking them out for tea. All I wanted to do was “catch up.”
It didn’t take me long to become attached to each song…and it brought me back to the TFF research table, eager to know the background of the songs, what sparked the one titled “Hey Andy” and what was next? 11 years later I’m still in awe of this album’s sound. It’s still way ahead of its time. Of every solo album produced by members of the band past and present, fans voted a year ago, on FB, that Tomcats Screaming Outside is by far the strongest of them all. “Leaps and bounds…” a few fans said.
Tomcats Appreciation Society
There is a Facebook Tomcats Screaming Outside group page made up of TFF fans (people who are supportive of both Roland & CURT). It discusses the lyrics and the album as if it were Shakespeare (because it is the next best thing, hands down). The group is moderated by Alisa of Wild World who collabs with Roland’s youngest brother Julian (aka **The Captain**). It is one of the many TFF topical discussion pages that truly focuses on the music of the band vs. how good they look physically. You won’t find gaggling-giggling girls and guys competing to post the next “hot photo of Roland & Curt” but instead an educated group of “thinkers” who hear more than just a song…they see a genius.

Release of TSO
Requests for this album to be re-released are not uncommon. Fans have agreed that they are willing to contribute money to the costs and a just under $300 was quickly collected 2 days before the start of the TFF 2012 tour. However, according to Traci Smith who is a member of the Tears for Fears Travelling Fan Team, $15,000 USD is the estimated cost of producing an album so we have a long way to go. The money that has been collected is held in an online banking account until the total funds have been raised. If anyone is serious about raising this money and presenting it to him, then, by all means speak up.
Ordering your copy
The album is available in what seems to be extremely limited quantities on Amazon and a few other places (note the profile associated with the Amazon page…) The album cost ranges from $10.99-$17.00 plus shipping, tax, etc. So, expect to pay $20 and it’s worth it…priceless even…so, don’t sell it!
TSO Videos
There is a video from the album. Some say it is difficult to understand (even Roland himself admits he wasn’t sure the video had anything to do with the song); others “get it.” We recommend listening to the album 2-3 times, tattoo it on your soul then dive into the video. Doing it in reverse order will only cause confusion. It’s a powerful album, be careful with it…
Listen to the video below to get Mr. O’s perspective.
Fans worldwide LOVE & ADORE this album as if it were human…and in many ways it is. It is the extraordinary work of a genius. There’s no questioning that. Every year, on the anniversary of its initial release, Tears for Fears fans spend a moment or two listening to it in all its glory. There are no words to truly describe it…it’s just outstanding…a brilliant creation that can be enjoyed from start to finish. The fan appreciation continues this year with statements like the below coming in.
“The album represents what all albums aspire to, one complete listen from beginning to end. Brilliant.” -Robert M.
“This album is a true masterpiece. Every song creeps into my inner core. Thank you so much Roland for giving us some of the best music the human ear can absorb. Our hearts absorb it even more. Here’s to Tomcats Screaming Outside!” -Brandi Anne H.
“Pure Genius” -Carolyn H.
“I thank Roland for creating this wonderful album. He is a true gift from God.” -Sheila S.
**Videos are linked to fans’ YouTube pages and those who have been so gracious to promote this album on YouTube over the past few years. Special thanks to Brigitte for the outstanding contributions and montages to match the music.
Now, GO BUY THE ALBUM!! NOTHING LIKE REAL INTERE$T TO GET A RE-RELEASE!!!
Saturnine Martial & Lunatic
Please Cutie Curt & Ravishing Rollie Sunshine, can we have another B-sides? Deep down we’re grateful they are singing “together” and prefer it that way…The solo works have been beyond enjoyable and TSO has certainly won its place with a gold medal in music. Our hope is that the band will release some if not all the b-sides from all of these albums (those that perhaps didn’t make it to SML) and just title it Our Hodgepodge Genius …and let us buy it. The amount of unheard tracks stashed away here and there is excruciating.
Let’s hope and pray for the best…if push comes to shove we’ll dress in various shades of blue, march peacefully to Bath and LA with money bags, occupying their local tea houses til they let us have it.
Digging the Solo Works?? There’s more…
Curt Smith also has solo albums and you can buy them plusmerchandise to match! Check them out on his website as well as Amazon.com.
If you are hard-core TFF superfanatic that appreciates everything that comes from that family, their friends and relatives…and you’re wishful for new music, be sure to check out DelaQ (just do it, you’ll be pleased). Cheers!
Andye (Nigeria/Atlanta), Cammie (New York), Captain Julian (UK) and Yvette (Armenia/Los Angeles)
Our membership has grown to include so many from all around the United States, Asia & Europe. In addition to the enormous crowd of ticket holders, we, the travelling fans, had 165+ active road trippers that met up at each Tears For Fears show; travelling great distances to see the band on the sunny west coast. We even had the ultra cool Captain Julian Orzabal of DelaQ. What a blessing that was! It is a great joy to begin profiling some of our lovely Tears For Fears Travellers who are dedicating themselves to fan touring and celebrating the band.
Cammie (@BxBourgie) joined us this year and tells her story.
I was born, raised and currently reside in Curt Smith’s favorite U.S. city. I can’t speak for any other New Yorker, but me? I’m spoiled, especially when it comes to bands, concerts and tours. I always expect that if my favorite band is doing shows somewhere in the U.S, they will more than likely make their way to NYC at some point. Why should I have to take a bus, train or plane somewhere else to hear my favorite band play? I’m in NYC! Everyone comes here! They’ll make it here eventually. So I’ll just wait.

In 2011, one of my absolute favorite bands ever, Tears For Fears, were doing a few shows on the West Coast, and I decided to sit and wait here in NYC, for them to announce a date or two here. Yeah… didn’t happen! (“Its not that we don’t love you…”) I missed them when they were here in 2010 because I was on a cruise, but when they didn’t come back the next year, I decided to stalk Curt’s Twitter ( Roland does not do the social media thing right now), and wait for an announcement of Tears For Fears tour dates. I waited almost a year. Then I began to see tweets. From Curt. About show dates. Curt answered my tweet to him, confirming the San Francisco date among others, but I knew better than to ask about NYC; I know that Curt likes to stay close to his family in L.A. I had a decision to make. Let another year pass without seeing Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal right in front of my very eyes sing the songs that I’ve loved since I got cable television and MTV when I was 14, saw the video for Head Over Heels for the first time and fell in LOVE… or was I gonna sit around and wait. I’m a travel junkie, it’s what I love to do, so this was an easy decision!
Fan Travel Tshirts
I bought a ticket to the San Fran show as soon as they went on sale, a flight and a hotel. And then met some fabulous Tears for Fears fans on Twitter, changed my flights around, booked ANOTHER hotel, got ANOTHER ticket to the Vegas show from a generous fan who was unable to attend, and had one of the most awesome experiences of my life. Not only did I get to sing along to EVERY song, almost close enough to touch the ever youthful Curt Smith and the beautifully elusive Roland Orzabal, I had great time meeting many other Tears For Fears fans – some for hours, others only briefly – as well as someone I never expected to meet who was also one of the most charming men I’ve ever encountered.
Roland & Curt in San Francisco by Jason DeBord
I know many people ask Curt on Twitter and Facebook why Tears For Fears doesn’t do shows in their town… but I will say that IF you can do it, TRAVEL to see this band, wherever they happen to be. GO GO GO! THIS from a spoiled NYC girl who expects all bands to come to NY when they do shows. 🙂 I flew across the U.S. to see Tears for Fears, and would do it again it a heartbeat. Around the world, whatever! They looked fantastic, and sounded even better. Shoes and jacket off at the San Francisco show, I jumped, swayed, sang and swooned from the first note to the last. I felt like I was floating! I needed a minute to collect myself after it was over, only to do it again in Vegas two nights later. Wonderful to meet Carri, Becky, Becky’s daughter Rihana, Yvette, Andye, Janice, Colleen, and Julian O. in person, and the many others I’ve “met” from other parts of the world via Twitter. (Much love to Margaret for sending me her ticket to the Vegas show!) As I am able, I hope this is the first of many. In the meantime? As Andye says… perching.
Cammie, we appreciate you coming all the way from New York to join us and have a great time. Other New Yorkers include Jeanie P who began her TFF Fan travels last year. We look forward to highlighting all of the fan fun in the weeks to come including a ton of pictures with the band, fan gatherings, mega-tour fan bloopers & funny moments! Thanks for reading!
Cheers!
